I ) 3 Celebrates First Birthday Entertainment Features Lions' Pub Night The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, April 29, 1981 New Deputy Speaker Sworn into Office Hi! My name is Vincent Patrick Norton and I am celebrating my first birthday on April 30,1981.1 live with my Mom and Dad, Cynthia and Barry Norton in Oshawa. My grandparents are Mr. John B. Norton, Kendal and Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Garrod, Newcastle. My great grandma is Mrs. Raye Friedlander, Newcastle and Mrs. Patrick Graveline, Aylmer, Quebec, and great grandpa Gordon Garrod, Sr., Newcastle. Tips Take "Sting" from Photography "I'd take more photographs," photographs," an occasional snap- shooter was overheard to say recently, "if it weren't so darned hard or expensive." If that's your excuse for leaving the camera at home when you go somewhere special, here are a few tips that can help take the sting out of shooting. -- If you use an adjustable camera and have difficulty focusing in subdued light, set the lens aperture (opening) at f-8 or smaller (f-11, f-6, f-22, etc.) and pre-focus the lens at about 15 feet. The smaller lens aperture produces greater depth-of-field, or area that appears to be in sharp focus. Larger lens apertures (f-4, f-2.8, f-2, etc.) offer progressively progressively shallower depth-of- field, calling for more precise focusing. -If you shoot a 35 mm camera and want to change film mid-roll (say, changing from print film to slide film), you can do so without wasting the unexposed frames in the camera. Mr. Cureatz welcomed the appointment and expects it will be a challenge and an education. Pub Night at the Bowmanville Lions' Centre Saturday evening included some live entertainment by local performers. In this photo are (left) comedienne Marilyn McHolm, and singer Allanah Coles. These were just two of the performers to take part in the floor show. frames have been shot (say, 12 frames on a 36-exposure roll) and begin rewinding the film as you do when the roll is finished. Do. the rewinding very slowly, though, and pay attention to the sounds and tension in the camera. As the film rewinds into the cassette, the tension on the rewind lever will increase. When you hear a soft "snap," you know the tongue of the film has pulled free from the film-advance spool. You'll also notice a lack of tension. Stop rewinding immediately ana open up the camera. There you should find the 35 mm cassette with three or four inches of leader sticking out -- just enought to allow you to reload that cassette at some time in the future. Then, with a grease -, pencil or crayon, write "Shot thru No. 12" on the cassette. When you're ready to shoot the remaining frames on the partially exposed roll, load the film in the camera as usual. Then, with the lens cap securely covering the lens and blocking out all light, cock and fire the camera until the exposure counter registers "13," You have safely run the first previously exposed frames past the shutter, and the remaining unexposed film is now left for shooting. If you have an autoexposure autoexposure camera, first set the camera on "manual" while shooting with the lens cap on, then back to "auto" for the remainder of the roll. Knowing this trick will enable you to switch films mid-roll with not waste. -- When shooting color slide film in an adjustable tamera, you can often get greater saturation and more vivid hues by underexposing the film slightly. To do so, set the camera's exposure compensation compensation control at (-'A or -1) which will automatically underexpose all frames at either 'k or 1 f-stop) or double the film's recommended ASA and set your camera's ASA dial according. (When shooting shooting 400 ASA film, for example, set the ASA dial at double that number, or 800 ASA, for a 1-stop underexposure). Be sure to return the compensation compensation control or ASA setting to it lion control or ASA setting to its regular position when shooting print film. - Whenever shooting close- ups of people or animals, focus on the eyes. That's what the world's finest photographers do to insure sharply focused photos. When the eyes appear to be sharp, the entire shot seems sharp. When the eyes are fuzzy, the entire shot seems blurred, - For a better price on film, buy in it "blocks" of 20 rolls. You can store the extra film in the refrigerator or freezer for a good year past the manufacturer's manufacturer's recommended-use date and not worry about deterioration. Allow the film to warm to room temperature before opening the container and using. ,- For more natural-looking electronic flash shots, use the flash off-camera. Hold the unit to one side of the camera while shooting. Or, easier still, mount both camera and flash side-by-side on an accessory pistol grip. In either case, connect the flash to the camera via an external PC flash cord, available at most photo dealers or from the flash manufacturers. ^OtO Smile Dad, This one's for Mom! I'm sure at some time or another you've all heard this startling remark, "To be quite honest, it's beginning to get pretty hard to tell if Sunday is really the Lord's day anymore." It seems that more and more stores are remaining open every Sunday. A sign on one supermarket window stated, "Open Sunday by Popular Demand." I wonder who demanded it? Certainly not the people who have to work. And now we even have our own Flea Market so those who have given up on Sunday Worship will have something to do with their time on Sundays. Ah yes, "remember the Lord's day to keep it holy". I know it says, "Sabbath Day", but who's knit-picking? I've heard parents say, "we want to bring our children up right." The problem is, parents are giving their kids everything but what is really important; a solid base to build a future on and a good sense of responsibility, instead of guidelines to follow, they let their children do their own thing, all under the guise of freedom. A child with no childhood restraints or direction becomes an adult with no restraints and a frustrated future. Oh yes, and there's the Sunday morning minor hockey program that discriminates against the child who would like to attend church, but is warned by the coach that if he's not there, he won't be allowed to play. More times than not their motto is, "It's not how you play the game, it's whether you win or lose that counts," Some minor leagues play more games than the N.H.L, play.
