Pigeon Racers Make Good Time The Bowmanville Invitational Invitational Racing Pigeon Club began the old bird series on Saturday, May 2, 1981 with what turned out to be an extremely fast race. Mom The birds were released at 7 a.m. from Napanee, Ontario, an average air distance of approximately ninety miles. With a moderate north-east wind behind them, some birds returned with speeds in excess of fifteen hundred yards per minute. A total of 284 pigeons were shipped by the club. The race was won by H. Verkruisen who also had second, third and fourth position. Fifth, sixth and eighth place went to T. Brown, seventh and ninth to J. & P. Skinner, with Triple V Loft taking tenth place. St. Saviours Church News Remember this Wednesday is the Annual St. Saviours A.C.W. Salad Supper, to be held in the I.O.O.F. hall. The Anglican women of the Diocese held their Annual Meeting at the Diocesan Centre this Tuesday, May 5. The Rt. Rev. Desmond Hunt, Bishop of Trent Region will come to St. Saviours Church on Sunday, June 14, at 4:00p.m. for the confirmation service. If any other interested interested parties in confirmation, please call the Rector at 987-4745. Following this special special service there will be a reception for the candidates with the Bishop. Your church wardens at St. Saviours are looking for volunteers to help paint and paper our parish hall. It will not be a big job if everyone gives of their time and talents. Orono United Church News Miss Anne Woolger, Newcastle, Newcastle, gave the call to worship at the special Sunday morning service led by the members of the Orono Hi-C group and their special guests, the executive of the Inter- School Christian Fellowship. This group have been meeting in the area this past weekend and are guests of our young people. This group is from London, Mississauga, Toronto, Toronto, North Bay, Ottawa, Barrie and Peterborough. Introductions were made by Bonnie Hardy, Pres, of Orono Hi-C and the scriptures were read by Duffy Hamre. The young people led the Congregation in a very enjoyable enjoyable gospel hymn time, and the guests gave several duets, solos and also a flute duet. Miss Kathleen O'Connor, chairperson of the group, from London, gave a very beautiful solo, entitled "The Greatest Thing in My Life" and this was enjoyed by all present. This service is cértainly a great credit to our young people and they are to be congratulated. The flowers in the church were from the Robinson-Lowery wedding of last week and flowers in memory of the late Mr. Otto Coatham and placed in the church by Mrs. Hilda Coat- ham. Mother's Day Tea and Mini Bazaar at Leskard this Saturday Saturday sponsored by Unit No. 5. There will be special music by Mrs. Gladys Brown and you are invited to bring "A Mother". West Durham Appreciation Night A large crowd attended the West Durham Appreciation Night for Scouts, Beavers and Cub leaders. This was held last Saturday evening in the Orono Memorial Arena, with a roast beef dinner, catered by the Orono U.C.W. Head table guests included -- Mayor and Mrs. Garnet Rickard, Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Haddon (also Master of Ceremonies); Ceremonies); Mr. and Mrs. Roger Latooze, Chairman of District Council, Mr. and Mrs. Keith White, past district Commissioner, Commissioner, Rev. and Mrs. Tom Gracie, West Durham District Boy Scout Chaplain, Mr. and Mrs. Allin, Provincial Boy Scout representatives. Also present were the husbands - wives of the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts. This group were from Bowmanville, Maple Grove, Orono, Kirby, Hill- crest, Enniskillen, Hampton and Newcastle. Mr. Bill Tdm- linson, of the Orono Scout group thanked the ladies for the delicious dinner. The evening was spent later in dancing and socializing and enjoyed by all present. Durham Complex News We had surprise visitors last week, when a full bus load, plus several cars of visitors from Millbrook, Cavan and Bethany areas arrived in our community. This group of Sr. Citizens were interested in viewing our facilities with the hope of securing some in their areas. The group visited several selected homes and after touring the grounds were served a delicious light lunch in the recreation hall. Miss Sandra Lunn, 4th year student in occupational therapy, therapy, in Western University, London, visited her grandmother, grandmother, Mrs. Archie Lunn, over the weekend. We are sorry to report several of our residents are presently in the hospital -- Mrs. Margaret Green and Mrs. Calder in Bowmanville Hospital and Mrs. Dody Thompson is in Oshawa Hospital Hospital with a broken arm. We wish them all a speedy recovery. We bid a sad farewell to Mrs. Rosella Lunn who leaves our community to take up residence in Oshawa on Tuesday. Tuesday. Good luck in your new residence. Kirby News Last Friday evening Mrs. Neil Allin held a bridal shower for Miss Merridy Williams, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Williams. Those attending from Kirby included Mrs. Annie Fisher, Mrs. Laurence Harris, Mrs. Ronnie Harris and daughter Kim. On Saturday evening the Couples Club held their monthly meeting in the form of a card party. Those attending from Kirby -- Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Ransberry, Mr. and Mrs. Don Cochrane, Mr. and Mrs. Forrest and Mr. and Mrs. L. Harris. At the regular Sunday Morning Church Service the sacrament of baptism was given by Rev. Wayne Wright.
