FLASHBACK -- 10 YEARS AGO -- The Legion Dart League banquet and dance was held at the Hall on Queen Street, last Saturday. The team championship was won by Jim Newman, Ab Mavin, Ross McKnight, Vern Conners, Jim Bruton Bruton and Frank Hill. SUGGESTION -- Milk is a perishable product. SOCCER -- In the Darlington Soccer League, Hampton is at Zion, Solina at Salem, and Orono at Tyrone, tonight, Wednesday, May 20, starting at 7:15 p.m. TRACK AND FIELD -- Aspiring women's track and field athletes are encouraged to enter this year's Colgate Women's Games being held at the Etobicoke Centennial Stadium, Saturday and Sunday, June 20th and 21st. The two-day event will feature twelve events from 100 metre dash to hurdles, long and high jumps, shot put to 3,000 metre run. Events for girls 16 years and older are held on Sunday, June 21st, and all other events for 10-15 years will be held on Saturday, June 20th. All events are organized and sanctioned by the Ontario Track and Field Association. Over $13,000 in Grants-In-Aid of Education will be awarded as well as medals, track suits and T-shirts. Entry forms are available at school athletic offices and local track clubs. Meet Director Mann emphasizes that the deadline for entries is May 31st. FIGHTS -- Nicky Furlano, Canadian Champion will meet Quentin Blackman, U.S.A No. 3 contender contender for the North American Super Lightweight Lightweight (140 lbs.) McGregor's IPA Prugs Tie Ajex Bowmanville 2, Ajax 2 In their first soccer game of the year, Bowmanville United Minor Atom team came back from a one goal deficit to go ahead 2 to 1 until late in the, game. At this point a few l defensive mistakes allowed Ajax to tie the game. The first Bowmanville goal came after Richard Seeton carried the ball along the right wing before crossing it in front of the goal. Dayne Lycett seized seized on a defensive miscue by Ajax to loft the ball into the top corner of the net. The next goal was scored by Mark Halliday who intercepted intercepted a clearing pass by Ajax and kicked the ball into the net. Playing a strong game for Bowmanville in his first year as an all star, was Julius Siebenga who controlled much of the midfield. By Don Fraser On Sunday afternoon at Soper Greek Park, Bowmanville Bowmanville Senior Merchants were full measure for their 7 - 2 win over defending 1980 league leaders, Whitby Merchants. Doug Crough started on the mound for Bowmanville and picked up the win. He pitched a strong game for six innings, giving up a single run on Turner's home run in the seventh. Joe Nowlan came on in relief and got out of the inning without any further damage. Whitby lead off the . eighth with a single by Robitallie who scored on Heffer's single. Jim Taylor , then came in and finished the game to pick up the save. Bowmanville scored their first run in third when John Stainton reached first on an error, stole second on Dean Rutherford's hunt single. Whitby then intentionally walked Cryderman to load the bases. Stainton then scored on a perfectly executed squeeze bunt single. They scored two more in the fifth when Cryderman Cryderman reached first on an error, advanced on Crough's single. Cornell walked to load the bases and the two runs scored on Gary Akey's single. The Merchants went ahead by five in the eighth when, with one out, Johnny Stainton homered for the first run, Dean Rutherford singled and scored on a double by Steve Parker, who has returned to Bowmanville after a year's absence. The final two runs came off Cryderman's home run that just cleared the fence in left centre. The eleven hit Bowmanville attack was led by Crough, Akey, and Rutherford who had two each, with Stainton, Cryderman, Parker, Cornell, and Finney getting one each. Oshawa Legionnaires will have played in Bowmanville Tuesday night with Kendal being the visitors next Sunday at 2:00 p.m. Let's get out and give them your support. BASEBALL -- Bowmanville Merchants Sr. Ball Club had a good opening day at home on Monday, defeating Whitby Merchants 7-2. Their next home game will be against Kendal Eagles this Sunday at 2 p.m. Kendal and Newcastle Lakers had a close game in Kendal on Monday with the Eagles coming from behind to win 8-7. From the way these teams are starting the season, fans are going to see plenty of exciting baseball. The Lakers v first home game isn't until Sunday, May 31st at 2 p.m. against Whitby. By then, they expect that considerable work will have been completed to put \their diamond in good shape. f NEED COACHES -- The Recreation Department is searching for coaches to handle girls softball teams, ages 7 to 9 years and 14 to 17 years.
