Bowmanville Legion Pee Wees took another step towards the All Ontario "B" baseball championship by defeating Port Colborne in two straight games 7-5 and 8-3. In the first game, Randy Reid went the distance in a rain delayed affair, scattering 6 hits and striking out 3. Port Colborne took a quick 3-0 lead but Bowmanville went to work and led by Andrew Oliver and Scott Veals the lead was taken and never given back. Andrew Oliver was 3 for 4 at the plate with 2 runs scored and one R.B.I. Scott Veals was 2 for 4 both doubles knocking in 2 runs. In the second game, B.J. Oliver pitched 6 innings and did not allow an earned run. Reid took over in the 7th and put down a bases loaded rally to record the save. Big bats were swung by Andrew Oliver who went 3 for 4 at the plate and scored three runs. Doug Hartford went 3 for 4 and scored twice. Randy Reid hammered out a 2 run homer for his only hit of the day and also scored 3 runs. Scott Veals came up big as usual going 3 for 4 and driving in 3 runs with timely hitting. Now on to more mundane matters. The K of C Squirt II squad hosted the Orono II squad on Monday, August 23, their second meeting in 4 nights. The Colts were victorious victorious once again, but this time by a mere 2-0 margin as the Orono squad shows continued improvement. Colts scorers were Adam Mohns and Dennis Ricard while Mark Ferguson earned the shut-out. August 24 saw Rovers defeat the Port of Newcastle Mosquitoes Mosquitoes 2-0 right in Newcastle. King Garden Soccer Club Loses Close One to Oshawa On Tuesday, August 17th at Oshawa Civic: Fields, the Bowmanville King Garden Restaurant Senior Soccer team were entertained by the Oshawa Rangers at 7 p.m. Previous meetings between the teams were split with a 2-0 victory to Bowmanville in the exhibition season, and a 5-0 defeat in the regular season. Rangers have proven themselves recently to be one of the most improved teams in the league, and their berth in the Labatt's Cup final on August 21st proves their talent. Bowmanville. have earned themselves the unfortunate reputation of giving up early goals, but started this game strongly and pressed the Rangers constantly in the opening 20 minutes. Good goaltending by Wally Seto who stepped in when our regular keeper was unable to attend, kept Oshawa at bay, and strong work by the defense of Bill Espie, Dave Brown, Mark Mathews and Bernie Lewis robbed Oshawa of their goal scoring opportunities. . Bowmanville opened the scoring after a long throw from John Cook was crossed over from the right wing by Geoff Gavey. Sid Ryan scored from the cross with a spectacular overhead bicycle kick to give the Bowmanville team a well deserved lead. Continued strong play by the team saw several close chances and the half ended with Bowmanville clearly the stronger side. The second half saw Rangers pressing a little more strongly and they were rewarded by a goal from Tony Wolsterholme after ten minutes of play when the awkwardly spinning ball eluded several of the Bowmanville players and gave Rangers an easy present of the ball on the goal line. Determined efforts to come back into the game saw Bowmanville thwarted repeatedly by a combination of back luck and hazardous officiating. On several occasions free kicks and corner kicks were waved away by the referee for reasons unknown. A failure to clear away a homeless looking ball just inside the penalty area saw Oshawa take a 2-1 lead when goalkeeper Wally Seto dove full length to stop a strong low shot but was unable to prevent the ball from slowly rolling over the line. Good points to mention were the excellent turnout of players, and a strong work rate from each member of the team. Keep up the good work and Bowmanville will finish the season in a creditable position in their first year.
