The protest march through Oshawa's downtown will take about one hour and women participants are invited invited back to the Rape Crisis Centre at its conclusion. The Take Back the Night march is for women only as men do not have to "take back the night." They rarely miss a hockey game or a movie because because they are afraid of rape or sexual assault and therefore therefore are much freer than women to walk in the streets. For many women to feel safe at night they have had to have a male protector and the purpose purpose of this march is to put women in touch with their own strength and power. For women, the fear of rape is an everyday reality reinforced reinforced by portrayals of violence violence against women in the media and by sexual harassment harassment on the street, on the job and often in their own homes. By marching together women take positive action to protest the violence done to them and recognize it as a step toward the power of collective action. The slogan "Take Back the Night" was first used in the United States as a theme for a national protest down San Francisco's pornography strip. The march took place at night and was in the spirit of many similar events taking place all over the world. Take Back the Night was a profound symbolic statement of women's commitment to stopping stopping the tide of violence against women in all arenas and their demand that the perpetrators of such violence - from rapists to batterers to pornographers - beheld responsible responsible for their actions and made to change. Men can offer their support by providing child care so that women can join the march or by making donations Women who need transportation transportation or child care should call the Rape Crisis Centre at 725-2241.
