\ i Retiring Administrator Honored Celebrates 90th Birthday providing a round of entertaining activities to mark the community's birthday. The idea of a celebration was originally spawned by the Chamber ana the responsibility for forming a steering committee was subsequently taken over by town council. When the town received a weak public response to a request for committee volunteers the C. of C. was asked to jump into the lurch. Mr. Brand says the board is approaching the project with enthusiasm. "The Chamber has a responsibility said the president. "There would be a lot of things in this town like Christmas lights, a Santa Claus parade or a BIA organization if it were not for the Chamber of Commerce," he stated. "These are real high spots in the life of the community and we plan to make the 125th anniversary celebration the same," he said. to the community," ' dn't TYRONE and DISTRICT Enniskillen and Tyrone congregations congregations met together at Tyrone United Church for worship under the direction of Pastor Mr. Joe Lafave, B.A. A single lighted candle at the front of the sanctuary gave life and warmth indoors in S C/WXV f 304 thickson rd. s. The reception was hosted by Miss Kathleen Morton, who is a cousin of Mr. Kney's wife Jane (nee Gribble) and her mother, Mrs. Ina Gribble, formerly of this area. Guests at the reception were from Montreal, Toronto, Oshawa, Bowmanville, Lindsay, Lindsay, Blackstock, Peterborough, Peterborough, Cavan and Mrs. Francis Jackson and Mr. ai*l Mrs. Wes McMahon of Bethany. Gabriel Kney has built many organs before but this was the largest and most complicated. (The organ, which weighs over 30 tons, was built at his residence in London, Ontario and then taken to pieces and brought to Toronto by truck. At Toronto, it was assembled assembled and hoisted by steel cables to its position. Mr. Kney explained to the guests that the organ uses mechanical action as well as there being a computer inside. The mechanical mechanical action makes the organ more responsive and there is no delay in time from the moment the key is pressed to the time it takes for the ear to hear the sound (at least not measurable by the human ear). The advantage of having a computer inside is that the organist can pre-program parts of the music and all programs are kept in a big memory system and can be recalled. As the reception was a tribute tribute to Gabriel Kney, music solos on piano and flute by Miss Laurie Morton, Oshawa were played for him. As well, Miss Jennifer Linnington sang and Mr. Robert Thistle, Lindsay's Lindsay's poet of the year, read a poem he had written about Mr. Kney and presented him with it. There was also a plaque presented to Mr. Kney's daughter, Martha, who is a very talented carpenter and who worked on the organ. Miss Morton has been to Roy Thomson Hall three times in the past week and described a ceremony called the Wine Pipe Tradition that she had witnessed. They took one of the pipes from the organ and gave it to Gabriel Kney, who then put it on a frame. They then put wine into it and toasted toasted its builder. Everyone then enjoyed a beautiful cake decorated in the shape of the Hall. It was an afternoon enjoyed by all. The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, September 22, 1962 11 Celebrated 1st Birthday Town Will Absorb Costs Of Santa Claus Parade Town council has approved the 1982 Bowmanville Santa Claus parade and has agreed to absorb any related works department costs resulting from the event. Council's endorsement was given Monday following a debate focusing on which of the town's accounts should be debited for the estimated $1000 to cover public works manpower and equipment expenses. The dilemma over town costs resulting from the parade arose at council's general committee meeting last week. Public works director Ron Dupuis recommended that groups holding functions on Newcastle roads should be charged for services rendered. • He pointed out that his department has been bearing the brunt of unbudgeted expenses related to events held on town roads and asked for council's direction in the matter. ENNISKILLEN To bring council's aimless deliberation on the matter to a head Councillor Ann Cowman stated, "I don't know why everybody wants to get their knickers in a twist over it." "Just set a proper amount and pay the money." "The Santa Claus parade is a motherhood issue and I don't know why we have to stall and drag our feet over a place in the budget to put it," said Councillor Marie Hubbard. The ward two councillor further added that council has endorsed parade after parade according to • town policy. "It's interesting that now we have a big problem with, it," she said. Town treasurer Kathryn Campbell told council that items of this nature not covered in the budget might be charged against Newcastle's administrative contingency account.
