> MP Ian Deans Attends Meeting of NDP Riding Association The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, September 22,1982 17 u r STARKVILLE and DISTRICT Ian Deans, New Democratic MP for Hamilton Wentworth, was guest speaker on Saturday, September 18, during a meeting of the federal NDP riding association. The gathering was held in Maple Grove United Church. Here; Mr. Deans chats with Fred McLaughlin, president of the riding association, and some of the members of the • ; fit's not too late to put .Canada's ailing economy on the road to recovery, MP Ian Deans said last week. "We are still a very, very •privileged country in terms of ;any other country in the -world," said the New Democratic Party's member of parliament for Hamilton- Wentworth. In an interview he said Canada has the potential to become self-sufficient. Mr. Deans was in Maple •Grove on Saturday, : September 18, to address a meeting of the Durham Northumberland New Democratic Party riding association. • Short-term strategies are needed to provide immediate improvements to the economy, Mr. Deans said. These immediate measures include reducing interest rates and protecting existing industry such as the automotive automotive manufacturing sector. Encouraging the construction construction of new housing units Would also provide an economic boost and supply neèded accommodation, the MP suggested. For example, the construction of 100,000 imits would provide work for 220,000 persons and these jobs would reduce unemployment Insurance benefits by $2.2 billion, he added. In addition, the stimulation of the housing industry would add revenues through other areas such as taxes. ' Mr. Deans blamed the nation's current economic state on poor planning by the federal government. He noted that in less than a single year, the federal deficit had swollen from $11 billion to $19 billion. Causes of the sudden increase in debt included added unemployment unemployment insurance payments and lost revenue due' to the fact that the unemployed are no longer able to pay taxes. If it were not for social programs in existence now, we'd have more persons unemployed today than there were during the Great Depression, Mr. Deans said. The MP suggested that the long-term economic strategy for Canada should be to develop the nation's manufacturing manufacturing sector, so that Canada can be self-sufficient. executive. From left are: Fred McLaughlin, Marg Wilbur, Mr. Deans, Wilf Day and Roy Grierson. He accused current governments of simply selling natural resources at the expense of building a strong manufacturing economy. He also suggested a national energy program so that Canadians can control this resource. He said the heavy taxes on petroleum products should not be used to pay off a deficit which has accumulated due to bad management, but should be used to develop an industrial base. He suggested that Canadians work together with other parts of the world in the selling of their own manufactured manufactured goods as well as raw material. Mr. Deans indicated that a country such as Canada with rich resources and manufacturing manufacturing skills should be able to withstand downturns in the international economy.
