BAHA'I WORLD FAITH God's divinely appointed appointed scheme for the unification unification of mankind in this age, Is Divine in origin, all-embracing In scope and equitable In principle, that a harassed harassed humanity must strive for. P.O. Box 36, Bowmanville. Elizabeth Araujo, a co-op student at the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce branch at Temperance and King St., Bowmanville, chats with customers Susan and Lisa Sellers. Elizabeth is working at the bank this semester in order to earn credits towards her high schoolprogram at Clarke. She's one of more than 200 Clarke High School students who are at work part-time in the business community this fall, through the co-operative education program. Elizabeth Araujo is banking on becoming more knowledgeable knowledgeable about a career in accounting as a result of her co-operative education experience at Clarke High School this fall. In the next five months, she will be working several hours each day at the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce branch at the corner of Temperance St. and King St., Bowmanville. The grade 12 student is one of more than 200 Clarke High School pupils who are doing various jobs throughout the community in order to gain practical work experience. The co-op program helps students develop work habits, lets them experience a potential career and gives them a head start on the job market by providing them with experience. Elizabeth is currently working working between one and 3:15 each afternoon. Her training is similar to what a new bank employee would receive. Cashing cheques, posting entries, balances, and closing the till are some of the jobs that she will be doing. "It's different from what you do in school.Tn school, you' just practice. Here, you do it," ■' Elizabeth explained last week. She adds that she has found there is a lot to learn at the local bank since she started Thursday, September 9, She is especially interested in working with computers and hopes to follow a career in accounting after she finishes high school. For the 220 hours that she spends at the bank, Elizabeth will receive two credits towards her high school diploma. Although there are other banks who use co-op students, Elizabeth is the first student to work at a branch of the Bank of Commerce in Ontario. Based on its experiment with the program here, the bank may decide future policies on co-op ■ education at the secondary school level. Gary Wright, administration administration officer, éxplained that a new employee at the bank would normally begin as a teller and gradually move to various other posts. The training program would include work as a proof teller, work on the ledger desk, savings accounts, cheques, and a variety of other jobs. The education process is also Education Programme Now Summer is over, schools are back and it is time to get the Youth Education Programme, sponsored by the Royal Canadian Legion under way. All the information kits have been delivered to the local schools concerning the Remembrance Day Literary and Poster Contest and the Public Speaking Contest. All students from Grades 4 to 13 are eligible to enter these contests. The Literary and Poster Contests have 3 levels, Grades 4-6,7,8 and 9, and 10 to 13. Entries from the students in Grades 4-6, 7-9, must be entered at the school they attend. For grades 10-13, entries can be sent directly to me. I would like to see more students enter from the Senior Grades. The top prize at Dominion Level for Seniors is $275 and a free trip to Ottawa on November 11th, 1983. Entries must be in my hands by November 17th. Public Speaking Contests at Branch Level will be held at Bowmanville Legion Hall on February 13th. and 20th. 1983. If anyone has any questions or would like to see the information that is sent to the schools, I will be at the Bowmanville Mall on Friday, September 24th from 2-5 p.m. with some of the previous years winners. This is in conjunction with Legion Week. I would like to congratulate Elaine Falls from Clarke High School for placing second at the District level in last year's Poster Contest. H. (Bob) Brown, Youth Education Chariman Phone 623-4573. backed by training at head office in Toronto and sometimes sometimes by working at other banks in the area. He added that the attitude displayed by an applicant is an important factor in the hiring of new staff. Providing good service is important and a teller must be able to do this. The teller must also be able to remain alert and cool-headed at all times. Eva Nichols, co-ordinator of the co-operative education program at Clarke, explained that the school has been involved in the co-operative education program for the past eight years. In fact, Clarke was one of the first secondary schools in Ontario to introduce the program. With one-third of all students enrolled in a cooperative cooperative activity of some kind, Clarke has the highest percentage of students participating participating in co-op education in Ontario. All work experience must be related to a subject that a student is studying at school, and the students' progress is checked at least every three weeks by high school staff. The co-ordinator at Clarke also noted that the students learn habits such as punctuality punctuality and regular attendance through their work experience program. If their performance performance is less than satisfactory, satisfactory, they can be fired. Co-op education lets students explore a field in which they may wish to start a career. In a tight job market, it may also give them enough practical experience to gain an advantage over job candidates candidates who have no work experience. Just a few of the areas in which the students are employed this fall include veterinary medicine, agriculture, agriculture, photography, outdoor education, maintenance, mechanics and cooking. The program at Clarke has extensive support from administration at the school board and at the high school level. It also enjoys considerable considerable support from the business community which employs the student, Eva Nichols said. In fact, there are more employers than there are students available, she said. Ward three school trustees Bill Carman and George Cameron have also supported the co-op education activities, she explained. But part of the credit for the success of the program rests' with the students who participate. participate. The high school has a reputation for good, allround,. allround,. dependable students. "We have good kids- here," Eva Nichols said.
