Dave and Jackie; Collins of the Oshawa Dutchmen Undefeated in Non Contact CONCERN -- Amateur hockey officials are alarmed at the drop in participation, compared with that of other sports such as soccer. "We have to make it fun to play the game," said Dan Smith of Ottawa, assistant technical director of the CAHA, at a summer coaching seminar. "We're concerned about the dropout in participation and we must encourage young people to stay in the game." Smith was a speaker at the British Columbia Amateur Hockey Association's Level 4 coaching development clinic, attended by about 75 cèrtified Level 2 coaches. Smith elaborated on four model programs which the CAHA's technical committee is preparing for approval: Beginners' initiation to hockey ; recreational hockey ; higher-level competitive hockey; and an elite program for the country's best young players. "We would like to see this program of excellence leading to a feeder program for world teams and, ultimately, for the Olympic team," added Smith. "We want to promote the idea of playing for your country. 'Exposure to this idea will lead to more young players having this idea. And there will be education money available through Hockey Canada scholarships." "We have looked extensively at the European systems and designed our own program, with specialized training camps for designated players." By Bob Burke This weekends action saw plenty of scoring as all eight teams took to the ice in the Bowmanville non contact hockey league. Saturday night, Town Sports defeated Courtice Auto Wreckers 7 - 1. Courtice had difficulty dressing a full complement and as a result could only come up with 12 shots on Mike Willoughby in nets for Town Sports while Barry Robert had to face 49 shots. Scoring for Town Sports ■ were Rick Stockman with a hat trick, Phil Green with a pair and singles by Mark Clary and Brian Munn. Raye West notched the only goal for Courtice Auto Wreckers. John Moon and Mitch Clouthier each netted four goals for Bowmanville Rest, and Tavern while Cal Wheeler collect a pair. Bob Shantz collected a pair for the Beasties while Ron Gilroy found the net with two seconds to go in the game to round out the scoring for the Beasties. L Wood Major Midgets Open Season with Two Close Battles Plus Disaster Against AAA Team lion Udies On Tuesday, Oct. 5 the H. L. Wood Major Midgets travelled to Brooklin for their first exhibition game against a Whitby club that have already played several pre-season games. Circumstances have been such that the boys have only had one practice as a team and final cuts were still to be made going into this contest. Whitby took advantage of this situation to jump into a 5 - 2 lead in the first period. Scoring for Bowmanville was Randy Ellis from Jeff Dawson and Tom McLaughlin from Ryan Brown and Jeff Brunt. In the second frame, Rob Geidlinger and Ed Bird scored 16 seconds apart to narrow the margin to 5 - 4.' Assists went to Deryk Clark, Randy Ellis, Jeff Brunt and Tom McLaughlin. Whitby then found the mark again and put 5 more in the Toros net. The final goal of the game came at 6:03 of the third period on a fine unassisted effort by Jeff Dawson. With many new faces in the line up and only one practice behind them as a team, the boys showed great potential for the season ahead. H. C. Wood Mideets travel led to Peterborough Friday, Oct. 15 for their league opener. The opponents the "Pete's" triple "A" major midgets seemed to enjoy blasting our "A" team as even after they had reached the double figures they repeatedly blasted slapshots at our goalie from inside the face-off circles. Our boys are to be commended for the manner in which they conducted themselves. themselves. They tried their best and took only 4 minor penalties penalties but unfortunately the humiliation of this defeat made everyone, players, parents and spectators " ask themselves if the better interest of the boys had been considered when whoever is responsible put them in a league with "AAA" competition. competition. It would seem to me that the difference between "A" and "AAA" should be easily recognised by anyone associated with minor hockey but for reasons beyond me someone or group has decided that our boys should suffer humiliating losses this season. On Thursday, Oct. 7 the H. L. Wood Midgets were hosted • by Ajax, This proved to be as always with Ajax, a close, well played, entertaining hockey game with our boys coming out on top 5 - 4. Ajax hit the score sheet first but within 5 minutes Randy Ellis and Tom McLaughlin put the Toros in front. Assists went to Rob Geidlinger and Jeff Dawson. Before the end of the first frame Ajax hit again to tie the score. Joe Berney blasted one early in the second from Randy Ellis and Jeff Dawson but before the period ended Ajax netted 2 more to go ahead 4 - 3'. The third period belonged to Bowmanville with Rob Geidlinger Geidlinger scoring from Randy Ellis and Jeff Brunt and then the winner by Jeff Dawson from Roger Hornby and Randy Ellis. Good job guys, not bad for only one practice and one game behind you. jam TIKE ■EKVICE 299 DEAN AVE. OSHAWA 576-1220 Chargex October 14,1982 Team Standings J. Sutcliffe 19 - 19,700, V. Busy 3-Game Weekend for Bolahood's Minor Pee Wees The Minor Pee Wee Toros sponsored by Bolahood Sports World, 85 King St. W., Bowmanville Bowmanville enjoyed a busy Thanksgiving weekend, playing three games. On Saturday morning, October 9, they met at L.N.H.L. Canadians at Darlington. The Canadians jumped in front with a goal late in the opening period. Although outplaying Oshawa throughout it took a fine solo effort from Shane Armstrong late in the game to salvage a tie. Final score 1-1. Later the same. day Bola- i hoods hosted Ajax in another éxhibition game. The visitors built up a 6-0 lead by the end of the second period. The Toros finally got down to playing hockey in the third period, holding Ajax scoreless while ■ Dean Baumhauer scored an unassisted goal to break the Ajax shutout bid. The 6-1 final score was not totally indicative indicative of the play, as the Toros actually outshot the visitors. On October 10, the Minor Pee Wees travelled to Peterborough Peterborough to take on the Petes. This was by far their best effort of the young season. The game consisted of good wide open end to end hockey. The Petes moved ahead 3-0, scor ing 1 goal in the first period and 2 in the second. Greg Gardener finally put Bola- hoods on the board with a goal in the second period. Greg Goode and Jeff Woodlock drew the assists. Kevin Smith scored an unassisted goal to bring Bowmanville to within 1 goal as the second period ended. The third period saw the Toros really carry the play to Peterborough. They were finally rewarded with the tying goal as Shane Armstrong Armstrong and Ian Knight set up Scott Hanthorn.
