Bowmanville High School Commencement Exercises Exercises began last Friday at 8:00 p.m. with a graceful procession procession of the graduating students. Following this} O'Canada was sung with the accompaniment of the B.H.S. Senior Band. The ' festive crowd was then addressed by Mr. H. Bradley (Principal), members of the ministry. members of the Northumberland Northumberland and Newcastle Board of Education, and members of the administration. George Weekes Bowmanville 623-7345 By Sam Laskarls The B.H.S. Redmen football team concluded their L.O.S.S.A. season last Wednesday on a losing note in Oshawa. The team was blanked blanked 26-0 by the Donevan Blue Devils at the Civic Fields. In the regular season the Redmen came up with only one victory against five defeats thus exluding them from L.O.S.S.A. post-season action. This year's version of the B.H.S. Redmen lacked experience and also suffered from the graduation of several key players. For the coaches Bill Brunt and Chuck Lynch they can only wait until next season and hope for the best. As mentioned last week the B.H.S. junior boys' soccer team also concluded their season. The team ended with a .500 record of four wins, four losses and a tie. Bowmanville ended up tied for fifth place in their division just missing the playoffs by one victory. Under the direction of coach Mr. H. Netten the team players players this year were Vaughn Chambers, Bob Gill, Andrew Goad, Jay Greathaus, Tony Gregg, Shawn Healey, Lance Killingbeck, Mike Knight, Bob McCann, Steve McHugh, Kevin Nagel, Eddie Paradis, Pierre St. Amand, Tracy Stephens, Rob Terry, Tim. Whalen, Andrew Yates and Roger Yates. On Monday both the junior and senior girls' basketball teams travelled to Courtice and came home with victories. The senior team won convincingly convincingly 46-18 to increase their regular season record to three victories against only one defeat. Anne Rimes was top scorer for B.H.S. with 22 points followed followed by Bernadette Francis who added 14 points. Also last week the B.H.S. midget boys' basketball team played against last year's midget team, the ex-midgets came away with an easy 75- 32 victory. For the ex-midgets Bruce Cooke led the way with a 25-point performance, followed followed by John Theriault with 16 points, Steve Brown with 14 points and Brian Heard who added 12 points. The solicitations are generally carried out during the Remembrance and Poppy period. Ken Jeffries District "F" Poppy Chairman Royal Canadian Legion ALL CANDIDATES MEETING Last week's all-candidates meeting in the Newcastle Village community hall attracted the largest number of candidates and voters of any election forums to date. The Newcastle Village and District Chamber- of Commerce estimates that between 140 and 150 members of the public turned out to the meeting held Tuesday, October 26. In addition to the persons seeking seats on Newcastle's town council for Ward Three (Orono, Newcastle and Clarke Township), the meeting also included mayoralty contenders, Ward Three school board candidates, separate school board candidates and persons running for seats on the hydro-' electric commission. The meeting, which included included speeches and written questions from the floor, was chaired by Tom Simpson, the incpming president of the Chamber.-, midget team was Rod Tukker with 14 points. Finally this week, B.H.S. sent four runners to the Central Central Ontario Secondary School' Association cross-country running meet held in Brighton on Thursday. Debbie Vanden- burg, Pam King, Dan Moria- rity and Matthew Goad all ran strong races in a very competitive competitive field of runners. None of the B.H.S. runners were able to qualify for the All-Ontario championships but they have nothing to be ashamed of as getting as far as they did is quite an accomplishment accomplishment in itself. About 100 town citizens gathered in the Bowmanville High School auditorium Thursday night for an all candidates forum of ward two municipal council hopefuls. The event was co-sponsored by the Bowmanville Chamber of Commerce and the downtown downtown merchants association. The structure of the forum allowed each candidate an opportunity to convey his platform platform to the audience and each segment concluded with the time allotment for questions from the floor. Despite verbal encouragements encouragements from forum co-chairman co-chairman Tony Brand, the audience audience responded with only four questions to the 11 candidates present. Starting off the evening with their platforms were mayoralty mayoralty candidates Garnet Rickard (incumbent), Harry Wade and Thomas Vanderende. Both Mr. Rickard and Mr. Wade agreed that the town can benefit from regional government government while Thomas Vanderende Vanderende blasted the system. He criticized local policing, a housing shortage and downtown downtown parking and based his charges on regional government government policy. All four candidates vying for Bowmanville's regional council council seat attended the forum. Each of the candidates was asked to respond about how Bowmanville might make itself heard at the regional government level. Mr. Kelly said the regional representative elected must understand the issues, be prepared prepared to listen to the people, have the courage to make decisions and work in harmony harmony with other Durham Region councillors. Incumbent regional councillor councillor Maurice Prout reminded the audience of the amount of road work done within the town of Newcastle during the present term. Councillor Prout said he will continue to push for a shopping mall at Waverley and Base Line Roads.
