New Detention Wing Opened at Millbrook Correctional Centre A new detention unit was officially opened at the Mill- brook Correctional Centre on Friday, November 19, 1982 at ;vu p.m. by the Honourable Douglas J. Wiseman, minister of government services and the minister of correctional services the Honourable Nicholas G. Leluk. Other members of the platform platform party included the Honourable John Turner, Speaker of the House, MPP for Peterborough, the wardens and reeves of Mill- brook and Cavan Townships and the City of Peterborough, and the superintendent of Mill- brook Correctional Centre. This new self-contained unit will house 26 inmates. The unit is fully equipped with closed- circuit T.V., a central observation observation corridor, and an exercise exercise yard for the inmates who will be housed there. The grill work and cell doors in the unit (valued at $300,000) were designed by a senior Millbrook staff member, and were constructed by inmates and staff. Thé total cost of the unit is $1,370,000. Millbrook Correctional Centre is the only maximum security provincial institution for males serving sentences of up to two years less one day, and houses inmates classified as behavior problems and-or security risks. The main institution, which was officially opened on June .1, 1957, houses 224 inmates with another 12 in the minimum minimum security annex. The contract provides an additional $97,920 for the continuing continuing evaluation of new composite materials that are lighter and stronger and the development of practical processing techniques for producing automotive components with these materials. materials.
