VAN BELLE HOW LIVING GIFTS CAN BRIGHTEN YOUR DAY Since time began, flowers have played an important part in the lives of the human being, and I think rightly so, since they are the natural living forms to complement our lives. Created to make our lives more meaningful, and to give us the beauty and enjoyment we all can appreciate. appreciate. This is one of the reasons that I have chosen this field of work, first since I enjoy working with living plants and secondly to see the happiness that flowers bring to people. Did you ever notice when giving a beautifully made up arrangement, or a plant in full bloom, to someone how their faces will light up and the joy expressed? There are many gift items that can be given for Christmas, Christmas, especially in the line of plants, and I will take this time to comment on some of them. The number one of course is the Poinsettia, with it's bright colors and the long lasting qualities, they are again available in different sizes, from the small 4 inch pots to the jumbo size, and from the hanging basket to the new tree form, they all are welcome gifts. The next one is the lovely Azalea bush which comes in a variety of colors, probably slightly more costly out well worth the price, since you can keep them for several years; by planting them outside iff the summer months and then bringing them back in for the next winter's flowering. This plant is often called the Christmas rose, mainly because it resembles the flower of the rose. It's long lasting flowers will give you color for several weeks. The secret to keeping them healthy is to make sure that they don't dry out, since the plant is planted almost completely completely in peatmoss. You will also notice that there are several buds that have not up but they will open, by misting them to keep the buds moist. Azaleas come in a variety of colors, mostly red and pinks and then of course the lovely pure white flowers. An interesting deviation from the regular style is the tree-form with a two foot stem and then a crown on top with the flowers neatly perked on the foliage. We haa some last year and kept them over by putting them outside in the spring and then brought them in in the fall for another flowering just about this time of the year. Another interesting plant is the Jerusalem Cherry, it has clusters of orange fruit on the stems, which almost look like small oranges. The fruit when, opened is full of seed, which can be saved so that you can sow them in the spring and have them ready for the fall to bring inside. The plant cannot be kept over as it will lose all it's leaves, but will last up to two months and since it is inexpensive it is still an interesting plant for the festive season. Make sure that it does not dry out, keep it in as cool a spot , as possible and mist the foliage twice a week. Until next week, more on indoor Christmas living gifts. FICTION: Deighton, Len.
