! Checker's Miner Atoms Ploy et Civic Auditorium Checker's Variety Minor Atoms have had a busy week. Monday night was regular practice at Darlington Arena and Tuesday night, Jan. 11, the gang journeyed to Don Beer Arena in Pickering to play the Pickering boys. Although the Toros put up a determined effort, the "AAA" Pickering boys had the upper handanoscored 12 goals in the C e while the Toros, Chris m on an assist from Ron Luxton and Brad Banks, scored only a single goal. On Sat., Jan. " 15, the Checker's boys had the opportunity opportunity to play a game in the Oshawa Civic Auditorium which was a totally new experience and feeling with the ice surface being much larger than what the boys are used to and the 8:00 a.m. time . being much earlier than what the boys or parents are accustomed to on Saturday morning! However, the Toros enjoyed the challenge put up from the Oshawa State Farm Canadians even though the scoring outcome was 4 - 1 in favour of Oshawa. The Toros were able to score the first goal at the 2:27 mark of the • first period with Christian Forsey scoring it and Erin O'Toole and Jason Kiely assisting. The Canadians Canadians then scored three quick goals in the 2nd period and a final goal in period 3. The Toro team then had a couple of hours rest and time to journey to Darlington Arena to host the Oshawa Checkers Variety Minor Atom team. Although the Toros held the Oshawa boys to a scoreless tie at the end of the first period, Oshawa were able to score four times in the 2nd period and two more times in the 3rd period leaving the game 6 - 0 in favour of Oshawa. Pee Wee 2'$ Lose Despite Determined Teem Effort On Tuesday, January 11 the Pee Wee 2's travelled to Whitby Whitby where they lost 4-0. The boys played an excellent game but without the superb goaltending goaltending of Paul Gallant, the score would havé been much higher. On T Thursday, January 13, the Pee Wee 2's went to Pickering where they lost again 5-0. The boys put out their best effort again but to no avail. This game was called due to curfew and also one of our boys got hurt right at the I. He is l' end. fine now and was playing again on Saturday, January 15 when they played an exhibition game against Orono, tying 2-2. Goal scorers were Paul Boyle, assisted by Neil Taylor and Scott Munroe, assisted by Paul Boyle and Neil Taylor. Sunday, January 16 saw our boys end a busy week and lose again to Ajax 6-2. Goal scorers in this game were Ian Knight, assisted by Troy Harness and Mark Van Lewan assisted by Paul Hindman and Jayme Campbell. Both games saw the eventual winners build up big leads only to have the opponents come back to almost win. In the first game, Walter Frank's managed to hold onto second place by dumping Cowans 6 - 5. Sun Allin was the big gun for Cowan's getting three goals and one assist. Also scoring were Jim Treen (2 goals, 1 assist), Rob Large (2 assists), Barry Brunt (1 assist) and Steve Hogarth (1 assist). The second game was a real blow out in the first period as Spencers raced to a 5 - 2 lead. Tilings then settled down to a normal pace. The Relics jumped out to an early two goal lead. Gerry Henderson then scored on passes from Bob Deblois and Art Hester. After the Relics had scored their third goal, Bowmanville fought back with an unassisted goal by Ron Clemens. However, Peterborough put the game out of reach with their fourth goal, late in the third period. In the closing minutes, George Sainsbury scored on a fine pass from Bob Marjerrison. Grant Wright and Art Hester shared the goal-tending duties, making fine saves in the Bowmanville net. This game turned out to be by far one of the best efforts put forth by the Toros as a team this season. Although coming out on the short end of a 3 - 2 score Bolahood's could very easily have won this encounter. The first period ended in a 1 -1 draw as Bowmanville took and early lead on a goal by Steve Smith only to have Pickering tie it up. Jim Pithie and Shane Armstrong drew assists on Steve's goal. After a scoreless second period, the same Toro threesome combined for the go-ahead goal early in the third. This time it was Jim Pithie finishing off an excellent three way passing play on a Toro power play. Pickering came right back and tied the score a minute later. Pickering then scored the game winner on a hotly disputed goal in which it appeared the referee had lost his whistle with the puck held by Bolahood's goalie. It finally squirted loose and was tipped into the net. Taking part in Young Canada Day the Minor Pee Wees hosted Woodville on January 8. Woodville jumped into a three goal first period lead as they scored three goals in a three minute span towards the end of the frame. The second period was a saw- off as neither team was able to find the net. Bowmanville finally got down to the hockey they are capable of playing in the third period. They were able to narrow the scored to 3 - 2 but were unable to find the equalizer. Dean Baumhauer scored Toros' first goal on an unassisited effort while Woodville was playing a man short. Jim Pithie scored the second goal of the game for Bowmanville with Steve Smith and Shane Armstrong earning assists on the play. Final score Woodville 3, Toros 2. Congratulations to Dean Baumhauer, who was picked as the game MVP for Bowmanville. On January 9 Bolahood's travelled to Peterborough for a league game with the "AAA" Petes. Peterborough hit first on the power play. They kept up the pressure scoring two more goals late in the first period to take a 3 - 0 lead. The Toros kept working hard and were finally rewarded with a power play goal in the second by Doug Lever from Jeff Woodlock. Bowmanville ran into some, penalty problems in the third period and the Petes capitalized for their fourth goal of the game. The final score was 4 - l for Peterborough. The boys worked hard in this game and Durham Building Pee Wees Saturday, January 8, the Pee Wee 2's hosted Thornhill for Young Canada Day. Bowmanville opened the scoring at 8:54 of the first period, with a goal from Paul Boyle, assisted by Scott Munro and John Paul Duczmalewski. Thornhill scored their first goal with 4:55 left in the first period. Second period brought forth three more goals for Bowmanville. Scott Munro aided by Paul Boyle, Paul Boyle assisted by Scott Munro and Ian Knight unassisted. The third period Ian Knight unassisted and by Ian Knight, assisted by Scott Munro. Paul Boyle and Ian Knight each got a hat-trick. Congratulations to both boys. With only three seconds left in the game Thornhill scored ending in a tie 6-6. Sunday, January 9, Bowmanville defeated Cobourg 3 to 2. A well played game with team effort an important factor. Scott Brunt scored the first goal with assists going to Mark Van Leeuwen and John Paul Duczmalewski. Second goal by Paul Boyle aided by Scott Munro and Steven McCullough. McCullough. Cobourg scored one goal in first period. Second period went by with no goals. Third period Bowmanville scored one more goal by Paul Hindman assisted by Mark Van Leeuwen. Ajax had lost all three going into this contest and certainly did not want the Toros to walk away with a clean sweep. Ajax hit the mark early in the first only to have Bowmanville come back with two, Kevin Newell from Roger Hornsby and Deryk Clark, unassisted. The 2nd period belonged to Ajax as they scored three times to go ahead 4 - 2. Early in the 3rd frame, the Toros found the mark on a goal by Randy Ellis from Dan Weir and Kevin Newell but three minutes later Ajax hit again to keep two goals up. With four minutes remaining it looked like Ajax had it wrapped up. Within these last four minutes Ajax walked into two penalties allowing the Toros to utilize their power play. At 3:52, Randy Ellis, on a fine individual effort put the Bulls to within one with goalie Donnie Hayes earning the assist. Just 44 seconds later, the Toros exhibited a good display of passing which resulted in the tying goal. This was Randy Ellis's 3rd of the game with Dan Weir and Deryk Clark assisting. Final score 5 - 5. On Young Canada Day, the Midgets hosted the Oshawa Legion Canadiens and won 6 - 5 on a strong comeback in the 3rd period. The first period saw the Oshawa club go ahead 2-1, with the Toros marker by Dan Weir from Wayne Mutton and Deryk Clark. The second period scoring saw two from each team. Jeff Dawson scored both for the Bulls, with assists to Weir, Brunt and Hornsby with two. Down 4 - 3 going into the third, the Oshawa club hit after only three minutes to go ahead by two. Within the next eight, minutes, the Bowmanville Bowmanville club put their act together and netted three goals to clinch the victory. Scoring were Ed Bird, Dan Weir and Kevin Newell with the winner. Assists went to Dan Weir and Randy Ellis with 2, Joe Bemey with a single. Jeff Dawson was chosen M.V.P. from the Toros with an honourable mention deserved by Dan Weir's five point performance. On Jan. 8. shortly after their Young Canada Day victory the Major-Midgets departed for a tournament in Campbell- ford. Their first opponents from Millbrook were no match as Dan Weir led his club to a 4 - 1 victory with a hat trick. Randy Ellis scored the other with Kevin Newell picking up three assists and Ellis with a single. The Toros now met a strong club from Warkworth and having already played two games this day, Bowmanville were showing signs of weakening. weakening. Warkworth hit for two goals within four minutes of the first period which held until five minutes into the 3rd. Then Randy Ellis closed the margin to one from Dan Weir and Tom McLaughlin. The energy just ran out for the Bulls as Warkworth added one more to win 3 -1 and go on to win the tournament. A fine display of goaltending was exhibited by George Kennett. Campbellford travelled to D. S. C. on Saturday, Jan. 15 to take on the H. L. Woods boys. In an earlier contest this year the teams had tied which indicated a close contest was about to take place. The Toros doubled the score on their opponents 8 - 4 in a good clean game that saw only four minor penalties. This was the result of good officiating. From Ron Abel and Tim Preston who let the teams play hockey. After one period of play, the Bulls were anead 4-Ion goals from Ellis, Weir, Dawson and Clark, Assists went to Weir - 2, Clark - 2, with Ellis, Bird and Bemey collecting singles. In the second Frame Clark, Bird and Ellis scored with Weir and Dawson picking up assists. The lone Toros' marker in the 3rd was Clark's third of the game assisted by Ed Bird. Don Hayes and George Kennett shared goaltending goaltending duties.
