She had been ill three years. Daughter of Dick and Rosemary Merkley, she was born at Brockville, and educated educated in Bowmanville. On April 3rd, 1970, she was married to Gary Sonnenberg. A resident of Orillia for one year, she had previously resided resided in Prescott for 12 years. She had been employed at Brockville General Hospital in nursing, (R.N.A.). Left to mourne her passing are her husband Gary, two sons Paul 12, and Jeff 9, her parents, and two sisters, Evangeline and Madeline. CINDY LOU McGILL The death of Cindy Lou McGill occurred suddenly at Whitecourt, Alberta, on Sunday, April 10th, 1983, when thrown off a Tri-moto. She was in her 20th year. Cindy, was the daughter of Keith and Ruth McGill. Born in Toronto, she was educated at Oshawa and Enniskillen Public Schools, and at Cour- tice Secondary School. She was a member of Enniskillen United Church. Left to mourn her passing are her parents, and two brothers, Dale and Brian McGill. By Peter Parrott During the past 17 years, Lorraine Pitt,- a Newtonville housewife mother of three, has learned how to cope with blindness. But the acquisition of a Seeing Eye Dog early in the year has given her more freedom freedom than she ever had before. "I got back the freedom that I hadn't had for 17 years," explains Mrs. Pitt. She added that since losing her sight due to a brain tumor in 1966, she had learned how to walk with the aid of a white cane but disliked using it. Today, thanks to her golden retreiver, Goldie, Mrs. Pitt can go on shopping trips, visits, and even walks around the block. "I take her everywhere," everywhere," explained Mrs. Pitt, Her Seeing Eye Dog was acquired in a three and a half week stay at the Seeing Eye School in Morristown, New Jersey. Mrs. Pitt travelled to the U.S. in late January to begin training with her dog and she joined a class of 18 persons from all walks of life and from across Canada and the U.S. Businessmen and business women, college students, and housewives were just a few of the people in her class. Before they meet their new owners, Seeing Eye Dogs have already been put through an extensive six month training program. As part of the training training procedure, handlers work the dogs with blindfolds. For the Seeing Eye Dog, puppyhood is spent on farms near Morristown where 4H clubs raise the animals until they are approximately one year old. The Seeing Eye organization organization reviews applications from those wishing to receive a dog. Selected applicants are given a trained animal plus the three and a half week instructional instructional program at a nominal fee of $150. Remaining costs are underwritten by the school and the total expenses required required to train a dog would total many thousands of dollars. To their blind owners, the animals' worth could never be measured in dollars and cents. German shepherds, labradors, labradors, and golden retreivers are the main breeds used by Seeing Eye. Boxers are occasionally occasionally used by people who are allergic to dogs. 1 Mrs. Pitt explained that the Seeing Eye school was founded founded in 1929 and has been training training dogs and their partners ever since. And the learning process isn't over once the dogs leave Morristown. "The working relationship between me and Goldie gets better all the time," said Mrs. Pitt. Handlers Handlers estimate that it takes between six months to a year before the dogs work most effectively with their owners. At home, the dog fits into the regular routine of the family and has made friends with a beagle owned by Mrs, Pitt's husband, Jim. It is up to Mrs. Pitt to look after the animal, although members of the family can play with the dog to a certain extent. Play is only allowed, of course, when the dog is out of her Seeing Eye harness. in addition to her duties as a homemaker and mother, Lorraine Pitt enjoys other activities such as bowling, baking and cooking, reading, and water skiing. She's a little concerned about what to do with the dog while water skiing since the animals are very attached to their owners and are not supposed supposed to be separated.
