) 12 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, May 18,1983 Section Two YELVERTON This week's short but violent violent wind and rain storm has certainly stimulated the growth of the lawns if nothing else. In a very short time over VA" of rain fell -- eavestroughs overflowed and the surplus slowly trickled away into the already already super-saturated earth. Meantime we skipped skipped all the local excitement to attend a Co-operative Union of Canada annual meeting at the Skyline in Ottawa Ottawa as one of U.C.O.'s representatives. representatives. Highlights of the meeting were the speeches by the Hon. Donald Johnson and Hazen Argue and a seminar on the Canadian economy's effect in the Co-op Sectors. Neighbors Mr. and Mrs. Dave Foote of the Grayline, south of Yelverton, had an unusual surprise this past week -- the birth of a two headed calf by Caesarian section, a rather freaky looking thing judging by the photograph of same in last week's Port Perry Star. Have seen all kinds of two- faced humans but first time I ever saw a two headed bovine. Lindsay was a hive of activity activity on Saturday with two recreational events vieing for attention and attendance. attendance. Muskie day of course attracted attracted a large turnout of fans as they lined the streets to view the Muskie parade with each of the team members ensconced in a convertible, converging on the arena for the reception reception with the fans that followed. followed. Never thought I'd ever be an autograph hound, but today we have the autograph of every team member on the Muskie booklet--yes, they can read and write. Another interesting event took place in the evening at the Armouries -- the annual annual "Tartan Ball." The Lindsay Pipe and Drum Band provided two exciting demonstrations of their powers. The skirl of the pipes and the swish of the kilts is enough to divide the nation into two groups -- Those who are of Scottish decent and those who wish they were. The Ted Duff Trio provided excellent music for ballroom dancing during the evening. Mother's Day in this community community started on a bleak note -- cold, cloudy with snow flurries for the 8th of May. Yesterday we mowed the lawn with our overcoat on. Damn such weather! Pity that poor little baby horned lark that trotted across in front of us across the lawn and his chance of . surviving in this weather. Sunday service at Yelverton Yelverton combined three functions functions -- Communion Service, Service, Baptism Service and Mother's Day. In reverse order. Well deserved tribute tribute was paid to Moms that are living, or to their memories as the case might be for those no longer with us. Communion service was conducted by our supervising supervising minister, Rev. Bruce Harrison of Cannington, assisted assisted by our own Dennis Fransky with Elders Eileen Malcolm and Myra Page performing their elder duties in an efficient and professional manner (there was such a large turnout present that there was barely enough glasses of wine to go around). One single entry for the Baptism service had to be imported all the way from Stroud - a chubby little rascal Jonathon Matthew Robinson- infant son of David and Nancy (Moore) Robinson of Stroud and grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Robinson of Bowmanville Bowmanville and Mr. and Mrs. Balfour Moore of Yelverton. The Sunday School Choir - some 20 children, most of whom were preschoolers, under the direction of Mrs. Hazel Gray, Superintendent, provided the introductory musical number from the choir loft for the Church service. service. Hazel and her assistants deserve a lot of credit in moulding all these little bodies into one unison group. Two lovely pots of mums were placed at the front of the church in memory of the late Miss Emma Hendern whose memory is cherished by all her self-adopted Yelverton children of yesteryear. It's a poignant memory we all wish to continue to maintain. > A large number of visitors were present at this Mother's Day service. These included family and relations of Master Jonathon Robinson who were later dinner guests with Mr. and Mrs. Balfour Moore - Mr. and Mrs, David Robinson, Tanya and "Little John" of Stroud; Mr. and Mrs. Harold Robinson of Bowmanville; Mr. and Mrs. Gerry Robinson of Peterborough; Dave's brothers and sister - Mr. Christopher Robinson of Toronto, Miss Susan Robinson of Cochrane, and Mr. and Mrs, Oram Moore, David and Lynn of Yelverton community. Other guests included Mr. and Mrs. Norman Le May of Hamilton visiting their son Ken in our community and joining the Ray Robinson family and Mrs, Gladys Henderson in honouring Mrs. Etta Robinson on Mother's Day also celebrating her 91st birthday on the same date. All these also attended the Yelverton Yelverton church service. Many Happy returns to Mrs. Etta Robinson.
