Legionnaires Lose Two to Kingston and Whitby The Bantam Legionnaires travelled to Kingston for a Father's Day 1:00 o'clock game and came away on the short end of a 7 - 6 score. The field conditions were poor causing problems for both teams, with ground balls taking funny bounces and the left fielder having to run up and down a hill. Kingston jumped into a two run lead in the first, but Bowmanville Bowmanville got one back in the second and the score held until the bottom of the 5th. Kingston scored two more in the 5th and the 6th to go ahead 6-1. The Legionairres offense started to come to life in the 7th when S. Veals led off with a pinch hit double and scored on a wild pitch, In the 8th we scored another with a walk and back to back singles by Gallant and Short, however the rally was short-lived as Gallant was caught going to third on Short's single, and Short was , picked off second base. Kingston scored one in the bottom of the eighth to go ahead 7 to 3. In the 9th, two singles, a walk and a Kingston error allowed us to score three runs. With B. Oliver breaking for second on a hit and run, A. Oliver hit a line drive that the Kingston 1st baseman picked off his shoetops to end the rally one run snort. Dave Aiken pitched a strong game for the Legionnaires, giving up only six hits and four earned runs while striking out 12. At Soper Creek on June 20th, the Bantam Legionnaires booted away a game to Whitby. A close exciting game right to the end with each team scoring one in the second, Whitby scoring two to Bow- manville's one in the 3rd, and then the Legionnaires getting three hits for three runs in the 4th to take a 5 to 4 lead. After a scoreless 5th inning, Whitby tied the score in the 6th on a walk and single. In the seventh, with two out and a runner on 3rd, Bowmanville committed two errors allowing allowing Whitby to score a 7 to 5 victory, Barry Oliver pitched a strong seven innings for the Legionnaires giving up only four hits and three earned runs- while striking out four. Both teams played hard and aggressively throughout the evening. In spite of the distracting and excessive verbalization from the side lines, the players performed well. The Newcastle team opened the scoring and continued to lead through the game. The Hampton team had many scoring opportunities but were unable to capitalize on them. The cross-bar and goal posts frustrated them on several occasions. The final score was Newcastle II - 5 and Hampton - 3. Hampton goals by - Scott Hanthorn 3, Newcastle II goals by - Jason Carroll 2, Jeff Klompmans 2, Dwane Foster 1. On June 22nd, the Atoms travelled to Durham Christian School to meet the Bowmanville Rangers. The teams played well despite the extreme heat. Hampton proved the stronger of the two teams by scoring 5 goals, while holding the Rangers scoreless. Hampton goals by - Trevor Mercer 2, Shawn McFadyen 2, David Hartford 1. Allan Hartford earned another shutout. On June 23rd, the Squirts were also at home to a Newcastle II team. An entertaining game followed. Although the teams seemed well-matched, the Hampton boys succeeded in totalling 5 goals, while the Newcastle II team failed to achieve a goal. Several times the goal post thwarted Richard's efforts and helped the Newcastle goal keeper hold the score from going higher. Hampton goals By - Scott Blackburn 1, Richard Bateman 2, Neil Gerrits 2. The shutout was shared by goalkeepers Danny Martin and Jamie Mercer. The Squirts remain undefeated. The Tykes continued to practice this week in anticipation of another game.
