Mr, Harvey Aiken, Strat- haven Rest Home, Bowmanville Bowmanville has spent several days visiting his daughter, Mrs. Challice and attended the opening of the Sr. Citizens Lodge, Monday evening. Mrs. Marjorie McGee and Mrs. Bertha Touchburn, both from Bowmanville attended the opening of the new Sr. Citizens hall on Monday evening. Sympathy to Mr. George Carson in the loss of his sister- in-law, Mrs. Ada Carson, Bowmanville whose funeral took place Friday, Aug. 19. Burial was in Orono Cemetery. Cemetery. Beef Barbecue Party A large crowd of between four and five hundred people enjoyed the tranquil beauty of Orono Park and a really scrumptious beef dinner. The head chef being no other than the old pro, Sterling Mather and his culinary talents were sure appreciated. The menu included barbecued roast beef, baked potatoes, beans, cole slaw, pickles, rolls and a very tasty array of donuts. Following the dinner, Sterling (a man of all talents) auctioned off the few remaining remaining cabbages. The bidding was extremely brisk and prices went as high as $20.00 for one head of cabbage I (That's real inflation.) Mayor Garnet Rickard brought greetings from the region and commented commented on the true natural beauty to be found here in Orono park, ideal for a large barbecue barbecue party. Sam Cureatz M.P. brought greetings to everyone and again agreed how pretty our local park is for a group picnic. Draws were made and the winners are as follows - Chair - Dorothy Davidson, Chair - Lionel Tennant, Plant - Betty Chatterton. Mr. and Mrs. Ross Wannan and family, Belleville spent several days last week visiting his mother, Mrs. Doris Wannan, Orono. 4th Birthday Party The residents of the Durham Complex for Sr. Citizens enjoyed enjoyed their 4th birthday party on Thurs., Aug. 18, in their brand new recreation hall. Between 50 and 60 were in attendance and the hall looked most attractive with lovely flowers and arrangements, along with birthday cards. A tasty menu of cold cuts, salads, rolls and desserts was topped off with a large decorated birthday cake. "Happy Birthday" was sung and Gladys Brown added her usual musical talent. The special entertainment for the party, comprised of Mr. and Mrs. Phil Hayman, Newcastle, and Mrs. Bonnie Cowle, Bowmanville. This very popular trio presented a delightful musical program of sailors' music and also in costume costume the "Pearly Kings and Queens" of London. Added to this program, our own club members, Sonny Dobson on accordian and Mrs. Beatty on piano brought a fun filled evening to a close. A sad incident occurred when our convener Doris Day cut her finger rather badly, cutting our birthday cake. All your members hope your finger is all better before our next big event. Big Birthday Party Most birthday parties honor one guest, but this one involved involved 11 birthdays. Held at the very scenic "Squirrel Creek Conservation" park (Otono- bee Conservation Authority), the Challice and Aiken family birthday party involved guests from Kitchener, Bolton, Thornhill, Peterborough, Peterborough, Oshawa and Bowmanville Bowmanville and the youngest and guest from the farthest distance, distance, little Miss Rebecca Heckbert, Apple River, Nova Scotia. The young crowd enjoyed enjoyed boating, swimming and water skiing while the older generation enjoyed visiting. The oldest person celebrating his birthday, Harvey Aiken, Strathaven, Bowmanville, celebrating his 86th, gave the blessing before dinner, Mrs. Murray Brown, Peterborough, Peterborough, made and decorated the pretty birthday cake. A full agenda of games, races and contests were enjoyed enjoyed by the young crowd and a unanimous decision to hold next year's party at the same place. Those celebrating birthdays, Deanna Harmer, Kerry Lynn Challice, John David Killeen, Don Challice, Rick Tregunna, Doug Ferrier, Margaret Killeen, Nancy Heckbert, Jo-Anne Sutherland, Sutherland, Harvey Aiken, Barry Challice and Kenneth Munn- eke. Recreational Hall Opening On Monday, Aug. 22, a large crowd gathered at the Durham Sr. Citizen's Complex, Complex, Station Street, Orono, to witness the official opening of the new recreational hall. The building was actually built last winter and spring of '83. Only recently has the dining room been put into operation. Members of the 4T club have enjoyed one monthly dinner party in July and more recently recently our 4th anniversary in the new building. Our facilities include a large sunny dining room to accommodate accommodate approximately 100 to 125 persons. Our large laundry rooms have washers and dryers and also have the electric dishwasher. Two double bathrooms and a very excellent and well equipped kitchen make up the main floor. Downstairs one hobby and craft room and full sized recreation recreation hall, complete with both floor shuffleboard and table shuffleboard, dart boards, card tables, chairs and full sized pool table. At the opening, Mrs. Gladys Moffat cut the ribbon and Mr. Sam Cureatz, M.P.P. officially officially raised the brand new flag. Sam also presented a very beautiful picture of Her Majesty, "the Queen", to the Complex. Greetings from the federal government were brought by Hon. Allan Lawrence. The chairman for the evening was Mr. Rae Stewart. The president welcomed welcomed everyone. Councillor Marie Hubbard brought greetings greetings from the regional government. government. Both government representatives representatives mentioned the unique fact that no taxpayers money had gone into the building building of the new hall. However, the 4T club had received generous provincial grants, which had furnished the building. Following the flag raising and ribbon cutting everyone was invited inside to view the interior. A special thank you to the business firms who had participated in the building preparations, Russ Major Plumbing and Heating; Lloyd Taylor Sand and Gravel; A1 Heard Electrical and Joe Becker, Contractor. Very beautiful plants were on display display from the above firms along with other flowers. A very bountiful lunch was servéd to all guests by the 4T club and representatives were present from Grafton and Newcastle Srs. homes, The Durham County Sr. Citizen's Lodge directorate is as follows: Rae Stewart - President Cavan Township; Directors - Lew Woods, Bowmanville; Elmer Scott, Campbellcroft; Cliff McElroy, Port Hope; Bev Gray, Port Hope; Myra Paige, Bethany; Edgar Buttars, Gores Landing; Landing; Gerald Shackleton, Tory Hill; Harry Wade, Newcastle; Lawrence Staples, Sec.- Treas., Orono. Orono United Church News The combined services of Newcastle, Kirby, and Orono were held in Orono United Church on Sunday morning, Aug. 21. The many lovely baskets of flowers were placed in memory of the late David Hooey, Mrs. Myrtle Allin and . Mrs. Ada Carson. The choir rendered the favorite "Blessed Assurance." Assurance." The Orono birthday for this week is Carman White, Aug. 24. Next Sunday is the last combined worship at Kirby at 10:30 a.m. Kirby congregation invites everyone to stay for fellowship and refreshments, following the service, Special U.C.W. meeting Thurs., Sept. 1 at 1:00 p.m. with noon lunch, This meeting of the afternoon unit of Newcastle Newcastle U.C.W, will be held at Mrs. Garnet Rickard's home.
