t Successful Yard Sale Held at Strathaven Nursing Home The Strathaven Nursing Home held a yard sale last Thursday and Friday, with items provided by staff and families of residents. Here, some of the Strathaven volunteers and staff are at work among the many tables of merchandise on display. Specialist DURHAM EAST COMPETES COMPETES IN EAST CENTRAL 4-H CALF SHOW Durham East 4-II members members were showing their best on Wednesday, September September 21st. This day marks the East Central 4-II Champion Champion Calf Show held at Lindsay Central Exhibition. Exhibition. From Durham East the top 4 Beef Showman, Top 4 Dairy Showman and 4-H members who placed 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th in their calf class at Achievement Day could compete in the East Central show. The Durham East 4-H members were competing with 4-H members members from Durham West, Peterborough, Victoria and Northumberland. Over 200 4-H members participated in the event with the following following results for Durham East. DURHAM AGRICULTURAL NEWS Champion Dairy Show- person was Elaine Barkey, Blackstock. In the same class Sharyn Barkey placed 6th and Jay Van Camp 7th. In the Junior Holstein Heifer Class Anne-Marie Hoogevecn placed 5th and Howard Sikma 6th. Jay VanCamp captured 2nd prize in the intermediate intermediate Holstein Heifer Class, and Debbie Van- Camp placed 6th. Elaine Barkey also placed 2nd with her Senior Holstein Heifer Class, while John Snowden placed 10th. Brian Goulding had the Champion Dairy Heifer in Breeds other than Holstein Class with his Guernsey Heifer. Sharyn Barkey, Steven McIIolm and Jay VanCamp placed reserve in the group of 3'Intermediate Holstein Heifer Class. Mr. W.H. Somerville . DURHAM COW-CALF PRODUCERS ASSOCIATION FORMED A new organization to serve cow-calf producers in Durham East has recently been formed. One of the main purposes of the club is a weaning-weight program. program. Durham College Enrollment Meets Objectives Durham College postsecondary postsecondary enrollment this Fall is at a record high, although although it shows only a moderate moderate increase because of the necessity of controlling College growth until present facilities have been enlarged. Total College enrollment is 2,321 for the four post-secondary post-secondary divisions of Applied Arts, Business, Health Sciences and Technology. This compares to 2,266 at this time last year. Enrollment has been curtailed curtailed in first-year classes, which have 1,355 students compared to 1,412 last year. There has been a natural increase increase to second and third- year registrations as last year's record number of students return to complete their courses of study. There are 693 students in second- year compared to 611 last year, and 273 students in third- year compared to a 1982 total of 243. Breaking down the number of students by division, this Fall there are 324 in Applied Arts, 1,010 in Business, 410 in Health Sciences and 577 in Technology. Mel Garland, Durham's President, states that the College's enrollments are in line with planned objectives, and that larger first-year classes can again become a reality as the College's building building program is completed in the Fall of 1984. The Bowmanville "B" team emerged as champions, defeating Belleville 16-11 win the tournament. Bowmanville also defeated Oshawa in the semi-finals. Marcel Proust The Bowmanville Mosquitos received the trophy for sportsmanship this month during a tournament held in Stouffville September 10 and 11. The team, which is composed from selected players from neighbouring leagues, received top marks for sporstmanship among 20 teams. The sportsmanship trophy was decided by the referees, referees, based on conduct of coaches, players, and parents.
