Principal Harry Bradley welcomes Valedictorian Kelvin Sloos back to his alma mater. Valedictory Address by Kevin Sloos Mr. Bradley, Platform guests, Ladies and Gentlemen and Fellow graduates. It is a privilege and an honour to be speaking to you on behalf of the graduating class of 1983. In accordance with apparent tradition our graduating class was in every sense of the word unique. In September, 1978 we approached approached high school with more than the usual anxiety and nervousness, for we were the first 'minor-niners' to be initiated in years. Who could know the fear and apprehension apprehension as we came to school dressed in garbage bags and dunce caps trying so desperately desperately to avoid the grade 13's. Some of us tried a little harder than others and went running through the halls - and the occasional locked door - (right Kevin). We just couldn't wait until we were in grade 13 to dish out the same treatment and seek revenge. Finally after five years we had our chance. One of the memorable events of our day was the unique opportunity to initiate our new principal and viceprincipal viceprincipal and I must commend commend the gentlemen on their hula dancing. I'm sure a good time was had by all thanks to the organizing effort of Andrea and Sherol. Grade 13 is noted for having many effects on students, some good, some bad. It supposedly supposedly provides a chance to GOODYEAR CANADA INC. SCHOLARSHIP Tills Scholarship is awarded to the pupil in Grade XIII with highest standing including Mathematics and Science. Curoalz become more responsible and studious under the increased strains and pressures of school work. In reality however, it forced some of us to seek refuge in somewhat controversial activities like decorating trees with toilet paper or presenting Mr. Brunt with a flaming kitchen sink. A few of us even resorted to assuming a false identity. Is Bill Andrews here this evening? Changes have occurred not only within ourselves in the past five years, but also around the school. The school itself underwent a facelift with the addition of the Splash Pool and the deletion of my favourite favourite windows. There were changes in the faculty as well. When we started B.H.S. there was only one vice-principal and in our last year a second was installed. Also instated in our last year were some unexpected unexpected rules. Spares became study periods no one told us, what we were to study, and, how did everyone manage to remember their prohibited playing cards, but could never produce their infamous library card? As the hot weather of summer approached approached we were forbidden to wear shorts to school. This was to everyone's dismay especially to Simon whose wardrobe was cut in half. As we reflect on the five years at BHS, memories drift back, that at the time were quite unpleasant but now bring smiles to our faces, Who could forget the secretarial strike that left students trying to struggle through the teacher's typos. Then there was the janitorial strike that left us living, working and breathing dust and garbage. The move to Courtice to avoid breathing asbestos was a little late, considering we had already been fireproofed from Turn to Page 9
