i 8 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, November 2,1983 Ecumenical meeting a pleasure Nestleton - Caesarea News by Mabel Cawker Ecumenical Meeting On Thursday, October 20 at 2 p.m. an informal gathering was held at Nestleton United Church with friends from various, churches within the area attending. Greeting the guests at the door were: President Bernice Mairs, Elder Leona Sadler and our minister's wife Anita Davis. The meeting opened with Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee- a Beethoven melody from 1770-1827 era. Mabel Cawker chaired the event and warmly welcomed the many ladies present. After the Roll Call of Churches- an inspirational inspirational worship service was given by Anita Davis. We had very harmonious harmonious music- two vocal numbers by our talented trio- Gail Hiemstra, Janice MacKenzie and Bernice Mairs- and a delightful solo by Gail Hiemstra. Their singing has Warmth, quality and feeling- a pleasure to listen to. Organist- Gwen Malcolm accompanied. Offering was received in aid of Mission work and taken by Ruth Davidge and Jean Williams. Dedication by chairperson Mabel Cawker. Neta Fish introduced our guest speaker- Mrs. Leigh Tpmlin from the Cambray area- who presented a very informative informative talk re- the hearing hearing problems of her two children- daughter Arleigh and son Tarryl- who are students at the Belleville School for the Deaf. Phyllis gave us an insight into the activity programme followed at school- as well as on weekends when the youngsters are home. We were shown Finger spelling spelling as seen by the sender and the receiver- used by the school. A question and answer period followed. Literature of interest was on display. Phyllis also told the assembly of her interesting interesting ten years as a Christian- and how it all came about. A most gifted and excellent speaker. We trust she'll come and speak to us at some later date. Pres. Bernice Mairs voiced the appreciation to the speaker- our minister's wife and the singers. To top off a worthwhile worthwhile afternoon, refreshments refreshments were enjoyed and an hour of fellowship in a friendly atmosphere held in the Sunday School room. The UCW wish to thank one and all for whole-hearted support. A sincere thank you to the friends who responded to the invitation to attend. We trust all enjoyed our special Ecumenical meeting- a fine representation representation of different Christian Christian Churches. Get-to-gethers & Such Recently, Mr. and Mrs. Grahame Fish, Nestleton, "hosted" a belated birthday party for granddaughter Rhonda Rhonda Jacobs on Saturday. Those attending the festive party were: Mrs. Larry Smith and Penny, Hampton; Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Fish, Lisa and Laura, Oshawa; Mr. and Mrs. Ron Jacobs and Deanna, Blackstock. Very best "birthday wishes" to Rhonda. On Sunday, Mr. and Mrs. Grahame Fish had supper with Mr. and Mrs. Clare Snoddon of Sunderland. Recent luncheon guests with Mr. and Mrs. Sam Cawker, Scugog Point were Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Cawker of Scarborough. On Friday evening- Bemice Mairs, Nestleon, hosted a combined birthday birthday party for her husband husband Norm and daughter Diane Slute of R.R. 1, Oshawa. All members of the family were present with the exception of son Allan Mairs and son-in- law John Slute. Our "warmest wishes" to the recipients of this "festive" party. On Tuesday, nine members of Nestleton U.C.W. attended the Oshawa Presbyterial Regional meeting held at Blackstock United Church. A day of fellowship for all. Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Malcolm and Mr. and Mrs. Sam Cawker, Nestleton, attended attended the "Festival of Hymns and Anthems" held in Port Perry United Church, Oct. 23 , when Trinity United Church, Uxbridge and Port Perry United participated participated in singing- besides a fine anthem- many favorite hymns- with the congregation joining in. A splendid service service of song with the rich tones of a magnificent organ played by Jack Couperus, B.A. St. Andrew's Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Whitby. Audrey Leishman- Godmother- and son Michael- Godfather- sponsored small Craig Holland at the religious ceremony. Guests for this special service were: Mr. and Mrs. Grahame Fish, Nestleton, Mr. and Mrs. Clare Curtin, Lindsay and Mrs. Audrey, Leishman and family, Reaboro. < Nestleton United Celebrates 148 Years On a cool fall Sunday- Rev. Dale Davis conducted conducted the service with Nestleton United observing observing its 148th anniversary- 83 years in the present Church. Rev. Davis warmly welcomed a very fine congregation who were on hand to help celebrate. Rev. John Smith- our anniversary speaker- and good friend- was introduced introduced by our minister and presented an excellent excellent message taking his text from Colossans (selected verses) and Matthew 16:13,18,24,25. His sermon theme "So This Is Your Anniversary." Anniversary."
