4 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanvillc, December 7,1983 Section Two Board Elects Chairman and Vice Chairman Dr. Ian Wilson, a Cobourg surgeon and school trustee, was re-elected chairman of the Northumberland Northumberland and Newcastle School Board for the third consecutive term last Thursday night. His only competition for the chairmanship, trustee John Carter, a Colborne lawyer, was elected vice-chairman vice-chairman of the Board over Newcastle Ward Three trustee Bob Willsher. The elections were held in Cobourg during a special meeting of the Board. Chairmanship endorsements are renewed yearly by the 16-member board. Minor Atoms Play Well in Little Britain The Bowmanville Minor Atom Toros, sponsored by Checkers Variety, were in' action on the weekend, taking part in the annual Little Britain Tournament. The Toros lost two games and won one. On Saturday in their first game, the Checkers Variety lads lost to a strong Major - Minor club from Oakwood. The score was 4 - 1 in a very well-played contest. Oakwood picked up their first goal at the 6:38 mark of the first stanza, They scored three more goals in the middle frame. Bowman- ville's Steve Desmedt picked up an unassisted goal with 21 seconds left in the second period. Both clubs were unable unable to score in the third goal with both goaltcnders making some great stops. The Toros' second game was against the Bruins of the Oshawa Little N.H.L. Minor Atom League. Bowmanville won to the tune of 3 - 0. Both clubs went scoreless in the opening frame with some good chances at both ends of the rink. Bowmanvillc's Todd Cannings picked up the first goal and game-winner at the 1:31 mark of the second period. The assists went to Steve Desmedt and Neil Bateman. Joel Crombie made it 2 - 0 when lie scored at the 5:24 mark of the third stanza, assisted by Bateman and David Heal. Desmedt picked up his second game of the tournament, unassisted. Paul Zwicker picked up the shutout for I he Bowmanville squad. The Checkers Variety boys' next game was on Sunday against a strong Kingston "AAA" Minor Atom Club, Steve Desmedt led the way picking up two goals for his club. His first came early in the opening period scoring unassisted, to send his club into a 1 - 0 lead. Only four seconds were showing on the clock when David Heal picked up the second goal of the period, assisted by Chad Armstrong. Armstrong. Steve Desmedt picked up his second goal of the game, an unassisted marker. The Kingston club picked up their first goal, a screened shot, at the 5:19 mark of the second period. They scored two more unanswered goals and the Toros visibly sagged. There was only one scoring play in the third period, this one coming at the 3:33 mark. This goal sent both clubs into sudden-death overtime with the goaltcnders removed from their nets. The Kingston club picked up the winning goal at' the 3:18 mark. The Checkers Variety club have a lot to be proud of as they were the better club for the first two periods and with a little more luck, could have clinched a victory. The Kingston team was a good one and their team management was very impressed impressed with the Bowmanville club. Paul Zwicker in the nets for the Toros, played extremely extremely well and he had little chance on the shots that beat him. Every member of the Checkers Checkers Variety squad put forth their best effort and they showed that they're going to be a team to be reckoned with in the future. Games from Last Week In a game played at the Darlington Sports Centre on Sat,, Nov. 26th, the Checkers Variety Minor Atoms and Manvers played to a 1 - 1 deadlock, Bowmanvillc's Steve Desmedt scored the lone Toro goal at the 2:21 mark of the middle period. The assists went to Chad Armstrong and David Heal. The visitors picked picked up the equalizer at the 12:07 mark of llie final period, Bowmanville was again in action the same day, this time losing a squeaker to Oshawa 1 ■ 0.
