The Post Office will be closed on Monday, January 2nd, and there will be no Rural Route, Letter Carrier or Wicket services on this day. Normal operations will resume on Tuesday, January 3rd, 1984. L. L. Skuratow, Postmaster Dear Mr. Editor: I'm not a "Newfie" but I have been to Newfoundland several times. Some members ofjny family live there, now. I'm concerned about all this false, sentimental, nonsense about baby seals. It is time we began to face facts about seals and all the other animals. Baby seals are not killed just for their fur, nor are they skinned alive! The quickest way to kill an animal is with a blow on the head with a club or a stout stick. The seal is then quickly skinned. But it is dead! The man who does the skinning does not do the butchering. Yes, the whole seal carcass is used for food and animal food to provide food for human children (and adults) in Newfoundland and Northern Canada. Some smart photographer took pictures of the carcasses between the time the skinner finished his task and the other man came to carve up the meat. So the untrue story was spread around that the meat was left to spoil. It makes a good story, of course. i ^ Si * j Seasons Q/teetings $ . .... ... kit As nature sparkles in her new, white coat, we think of those who have been great friends. BROCK'S Service Centre Ltd. Ron and Shirley Brock Al and Sheila Brock Scotty - Ron - Paul - Grog - Bob - Ken Closed at 6:00 p.m, Christmas and New Year's Eve Closed Christmas and New Year's Day I was raised on a farm where we made pets of the young animals, as well as chicken and ducks. But when market time came - or even for family food, they alt suffered the same fate. No, we didn't get hard hearted, we just faced reality. All this stupidity about not killing animals - goodness gracious are we to let the animals take over the earth? Unless animals are harvested sensibly they would all starve to death; and believe me that is a worse fate than to be instantly killed with a club. Man is meant to control the animal population, and to harvest the fish, lobsters and mammals from the sea. I'm sure I liked my pet lambs or calves just as much as these sentimental people like baby seals - in fact much more so because I fed and cared for my pets. But market time came for them along with the rest of the flock or herd. Not hard hearted, but sqeamish if you like! It isn't easy to sit at the table and eat the delicious roast beef, when teasing big brother says "you know it is "Mike" you are eating." So the seal is part of the harvest from the sea. The complete animal is used - the skin provides a cash bonus to buy other food and clothing supplies. So let us not have any more of this nonsense about not killing seals or other animals. Humans have to die from old age. Mrs. M. L. Young 2-23 Temperance St. Bowmanville, Ontario December 14,1983 Dr. K. W. Slemon Bowmanville Professional Building Suite 203 222 King Street East Bowmanville, Ontario L1C 1P6 Dear Keith: I acknowledge your letter of December 12th, 1983 with respect respect to the hours of operation of the Fitness Centre over the holiday season. We have had considerable discussion about this matter. I must admit, though, that I didn't realize that it was going to be closed for six days, since I understood understood that it would be open two days longer than last year. Originally, with this year's holidays, it would have been closed one day longer than last year. The problem seems to arise from the fact that union employees employees would have to work over the holiday season. I would like to find a solution to the problem as I personally feel that these facilities should be open to the public as many hours as possible. One must weigh this, though, with the costs of operating such facilities facilities on holidays. The extra costs would have to be added to the tax bill and people complain about the taxes already. already. If you have a solution, I would be pleased to listen to it. Incidentally, there has not been a request submitted nor a presentation made by the people who were actively involved involved in the fund raising campaign to request Council to keep the Fitness Centre open during the holiday period. I will pass your comments on to Members of Council and hope that a solution can be found to this problem. Yours very truly, Garnet B. Rickard Mayor Newcastle, Dec. 19,1983 Dear John, In last week's paper you had a notice regarding Bowmanville Bowmanville and Darlington arenas, only open on Wednesday and Thursday, Dec. 28 and 29 and then again on Jan. 3,1984. Isn't that ridiculous? Many people and all the youngsters have holidays and here are these public facilities closed for activities. All our thanks and appreciation appreciation should be to Board members of Newcastle and Orono, these arenas are open. They are run by some dedicated dedicated interested citizens, who are concerned for local interest. interest. Not civil servants, whose favorite saying! "According to rules and regulations, etc." These volunteer people work hard behind the scene, no fanfare, no pictures, just community spirit. I am just singling those out right now, but there are many others. Dr. Slemon gave a good point on the Sports Centre. When people contribute to projects, you should ask: is it going to be turned over to the Town, or privately run and available to people? Newcastle Swimming pool was only open for six weeks this last hot summer, and then only certain hours. Just give it some thought. Merry Christmas Narda Hoogkamp. St Clair the paint & paper people.
