PIM FITNESS CENTRE - Wolfram Klose, R.R. 1, Orono, hopes to open the Orono Fitness Centre by the fall of 1984. Plans now include a squash court and two racquet ball courts as well as a large lounge and dancercize body fitness equipment. Recently two young jaguars made their appearance appearance at his Exotic Cat Sanctuary, one being totally black which is somewhat of a rarity. HOCKEY -- This Thursday at 4 p.m., the Fifth Wheel Bantams will be hosting an international hockey game at Darlington Arena. The team they will be playing is called the NorCal Blazers, all the way from California. If this weather continues, continues, the author of this column may try to hitch a ride back with them to some warmth. DRESS FOR SKIERS -- Provincial parks staff offers the following advice to cross-country skiers : • Clothing should be lightweight, yet loose. • It is better to wear several light sweathers than one. • Use a backpack or a waistpack when carrying food, wax, extra socks and other supplies. • Tuck pant legs inside socks. This keeps "pant legs from getting soaked. • It is better to overdress than under dress. On extended trips, too many clothes can come in handy - particularly if those you're wearing become damp or wet. • Mittens keep hands warmer longer than gloves. • Always take a hat along. Much of the body's heat is lost through the head. • Limit perspiring, if possible. If you sweat now, you'll be cold later. • Anticipate becoming cold. Put on extra clothing before you need it. • Eat high energy foods such as chocolate or raisins, and drink plenty of warm beverages. • If you're cold, exercise to increase circulation and body warmth. Now you have The Golden Rules of Winter. The rest is up to you ! G. Dusseldorp (B. Golf) R. Woolner (Castle) J. Johnson (B. Golf) G. Brock (B. Golf) B. Godfrev (Hunts) John Hogarth (Castle) B. N., Oshawa Custom Milling 725-4744 Whitby 0 --Toros 3 The Toros lost this game but were tied until the last four minutes and when this result is compared with the 11-1 result the last time these teams met, it shows how much the local team has improved. Strong games by Jeff Acheson and Cecil Stephenson were a highlight of the game as was the good positional play. In fact, when the Toros played their positions, they were as good as Whitby. If you boys read this, patience is what is required for good play. Stay in position and the puck will come your way and will always lead to a good offensive opportunity. Be kind and polite to one another, encourage one another. Teamwork by average players will win more games than a couple of very good players ana the rest of the team squabbling. The Toros opened the scoring scoring when Jeremy Laird scored, scored, with the assists going to Marc Peirce and Jeff Rohr. The Toros then gave up three goals, two when they had the man advantage and then Jim Pithie got a short-handed goal for the Toros, followed by the equalizing goal from Brad Lyons. Nicky Dennis earned the assist on this goal because he shot the puck from a long way out and the goal keeper gave up a rebound. Do it again Nicky. The Toros then played well until Whitby went ahead close to the end of the game. Bowmanville 6--Ajax 4 For the first time this year, the Toros beat Ajax. Ajax opened the scoring and the equalizer came from Paul Hindman with the assist going to Nicky Dennis. In the second period, a good second effort by Brad Lyons resulted in a goal with Jim Pithie providing the assist. Nicky Dennis and Phillip Green produced the third Toros' goal -and then Paul Hindman scored his second goal with Nicky assisting. The game became a bit scrappy after this with numerous penalties being called. Ajax scored another goal to make DURHAM FARMERS' COUNTY CO-OP PRE-INVEHiOHY CLEARANCE December 27 to December 31 20% OFF ALL CLOTHING (except footwear) 20% OFF ALL TOYS YOU DON'T NEED TO BE A MEMBER TO SHOP CO-OP Telephone: 983-9134 or 983-9135 Taunton Road and Hwy. 115, Orono Toll Free (In Area Code 416) 1-800-263-7805 the score 4-2. Paul Hindman scored his third of the night, once again assisted by Nicky. Ajax got going after this and popped in two quick goals to make the score 5-4 and it was a thrilling finish as Jeremy Laird scored into the empty net with Paul; ,getting his fourth point: :Ko|&ert Romano continued,to improve in goal and Ian Knight set up some nice plays with good passing. Toros 5 -- Major Red Wings 7 The parents thought we would lose this game by a wide margin but the team surprised us all by playing very well. Cecil Stephenson played an excellent defensive game and Jeff Rohr made some great plays as a forward. The Red Wings took the lead, two goals on two power plays, before Nicky Dennis and Jim Pithie combined for the first goal. The Red Wings then made the score 3-1 but the Toros battled back when Jeremy Laird put a rebound in the net from a shot by Marc Peirce. Brad Lyons the assist. The Toros fell behind by two goals again but a determined effort by Paul Hindman and Jim Pithie enabled the Toros to tie. 1 Earning assists on these goals were Jeff Rohr, Jeremy Laird and Ian Knight. The Red Wings scored another two goals at the last on a penalty shot. Keep encouraging one another and play this well in all the tournaments over Christmas. Stouffville9--Toros 1 The Toros played very well for the first period but Stouffville, who are undefeated this year, were too strong. The score at the end of the first period was 0-0 and the Toros were every bit as good as the opposition for this part of the game. The Toros' Jim Pithie scored the lone goal for the team and played a very strong game, keep skating like that Jim. Jeff Rohr playing defense was outstanding throughout the game. - Rrout's Raiders Lose Opening League Games Glen Murphy, Bob Howes and Brad Godfrey picked up the assists for the Photomen. The second game saw Castle Hotel take a brief 2-1 first period lead over Bowmanville Golf before the bottom fell out as the slippery green Country Club demolished the hotelers 10-5. Scoring for the Country Club were Gary Dusseldorp and Joe Caruana each with 2 goals and singles going to Jerry Johnston, Doug Tamblyn, Grant Brock, Tim Almond, Arnold Nicholson and Steve Cary. Assists went to Grant Brock with 3, Sandy Brown, Mike Adams, Jerry Johnston, Gary Dusseldorp, Doug Tamblyn, Joe Caruana and Arnold Nicholson. Scoring for Castle were John Hogarth with 2 goals, Dave Wilson, Geo Kerr and Kevin Tink. Assists went to John Hogarth, Ralph Cryderman, Geo. Kerr, Jim Hogarth, Rick Woolner, Kevin Tink and Barry Oliver. During the Christmas holidays, drop down to the Old Memorial Arena and check out the Thursday night Town League action. On Dec. 17, Prout's Raiders found themselves in trouble in the first period as J & J scored three unanswered goals. Prout's finally connected in the second period with a goal by hardworking Gilbert Holder, assisted by Ivan McDonald. Prout's missed the net on a lot of chances throughout the game, but in the dying moments of the game, Prout's Ivan McDonald scored, assisted by David Kichko and Gilbert Holder. With a minute to go in the game, Prout's David Kichko showing some good moves, scored their last goal ending the game 5 - 3 for J & J. Keep up the good work boys. The early going of this game saw little for Toro fans to cheer about as Orono, by the end of the first had grabbed a 3 - 0 lead. Early in the second, Orono found the mark once more before the Toros got rolling. At 7:28, Eric Janssens took a pass from Jeff Laird and put Bowmanville Bowmanville on the board. Later in the period, this same combination, combination, assisted by Brad Carnegie, pulled the Toros to within two. The third period was a return return to the first as Orono once more dominated, putting putting two more up on the board before Brad Carnegie Carnegie ended the scoring from Craig DeBlois. The final score 6-3 as the Toros have yet to handle Orono. Monday, Dec. 19; was a different story as Trenton came to town: Although the final score was a 4 - 4 tie, this was a moral victory for Bowmanville, who had been shut out in Trenton. In the first period, the two teams exchanged goals as Chris Hall found the mark, unassisted, for Bowmanville Bowmanville and Trenton tied it up six minutes later. In the second period, it looked like the past was here to haunt as Trenton pulled out ahead early before before Brad Carnegie, who played a strong game, took a pass from Mark Tripp and Albert Big Canoe to draw the McGregor boys even. Alas, this was only temporary temporary as Trenton found the goal to move ahead 3 - 2. When Trenton opened the scoring in the third, Bowmanville Bowmanville fans' hopes sagged but the boys from Toro Land were not finished and Rob Real finished off a pass from Big Canoe and Chris Hall just forty' seconds before before Carnegie from Tripp and Britt Cole knotted the score. A good effort by all from goaltender Bunker out was the order of this game and proved to one and all that the boys are coming along. A quick trip Dec. 21, to Oshawa and a 5 - 5 tie against the front. running LNHL Redwings, was the lastgame before Christmas. Once again, the McGregor boys like to look at the score first as Oshawa struck twice before Eric Janssens powered powered in a pass from Rob Real and Jeff Laird. Oshawa just didn't let go and struck once more before before the end of the first. The second was a different different stopy as Bowmanville came alive, starting with Brad Carnegie from Mark Tripp to draw the Toros to within one, then Carnegie from Tripp and Craig, de Blois to move even and Guy Freeman from Paul Boyle and O.J. Sidor to move out by one. In the third, Janssens pushed the Toros up two and a satisfied team sat back to watch Oshawa push two into their net to end the game 5-5. The boys will be playing in Acton Dec. 27, 28 for the only action over the holidays. holidays. TOURNAMENT -- Hockey fans should circle January 1 - 3 on their 1984 calendars. First game was played against Wheatley in a very close checking, fast skating hockey game. The whole team seemed to come together for this game. The goal tending by Wheatley and also by our goalie Robert Romano was outstanding. The only goal scored was by Nicky Dennis who won the Most Valuable Player Award for Durham Building Supplies. The second game started off the same as the first against a strong Hanover team. Our boys tried hard to put the puck in the net and Marc Peirce scored our lone goal. Our boys picked up penalties in the last part of the game and Hanover went ahead to'score three times to end it 4-1 for Hanover. Nicky Dennis again won the Most Valuable Player for this game. Congratulations boys on well played hockey. Fifth Wheel Bantam 2's On Wednesday, De- , cember 21 the 5th Wheel Bantam 2's played a home game against Ajax winning 5-3. The Toros got off to a slow start, finding themselves down 2 -1 at the end of the first period. Five minutes into the sec- ; ond period the Toros found ; themselves behind 3 -1.
