For the last number of years a week in January is entirely devoted to the study of one topic or theme; regular classes are dispensed with, speakers and films are brought in, special events are planned, and the community is invited. The entire week is "open house," an opportunity for students, teachers, parents, guests, and supporters to explore the different different dimensions of the topic. The focus of this year's Special Emphasis Week, January 23-27, is Celebration. For many people celebration means parties, with their simultaneous negative and positive aspects. While a party is indeed part of celebration, the terms are not synono- mous, as the week will attempt to illustrate. Each day of the week focuses on a specific kind of celebration in a person's life. Monday, for example, begins with a look at public celebrations celebrations in a person's life: funerals (the celebration of life), weddings and anniversaries. anniversaries. Tuesday shifts the attention to celebrating events on the church calendar, everything everything from the weekly worship services to the major festivals of Christmas and Easter. Wednesday examines parties, especially as they are experienced experienced by young people in our secular culture. This topic raises a host of concerns, all of which will be dealt with in workshops: drinking,. drugs, music, dancing, games and activities. Thursday's focus is on Folk Celebrations. Storytelling, Storytelling, folk tales, art and culture culture are only a few of the highlights of the day. Friday, the last day of SEW, is devoted to celebration and families. 'What is a family?" is the keynote address of the morning morning with a variety of workshops workshops fleshing out the various aspects of family celebrations. celebrations.
