» z > Buckhtm Transport Major Poo Wees Chalk Up Few Wins and Few Losses The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, January 25,1984 13 Letter To The Editor 1 a,ulun V ' ri,l V At,ms On January 14 the Major Pee Wee Toros sponsored by Buckham Transport Limited took part in Lindsay's annual Pee Wee Tournament. North Bay provided the opposition in the first game. Tony VanHoof and Doug Lever combined to set up Greg Goode for the first goal of the game. North Bay came right back to even things up a minute later. Near the end of the first period Tony VanHoof sent Dean Baum- hauer and Jeff Woodlock in on a 2 on 1. Jeff converted Dean's pass to give the Toros a 2 - 1 lead. The lone goal of the second period was scored by Neil Taylor with Doug Lever and Greg Goode picking up the assists. This was a short handed goal resulting from good hustle on the part of our penalty killers. There was no further scoring in the game, giving the Toros a 3 -1 win and sending them to the championship championship side of the. tournament. Congratulations to Shane Armstrong who was picked as Bowmanville's MVP in the opening game. The Toros met Huntsville in their next game. Steve Smith scored the only marker of the first period with Troy Mutton and Shane Armstrong earning assists. The Buckham Transport Transport squad outplayed Huntsville Huntsville throughout but were unable unable to add to their lead. Then with less than two minutes to play in the game Huntsville notched the equalizer to send the game into sudden death overtime. The overtime format format was set up so that each minute a player was removed from the ice until a goal was scored. With each team playing playing with three skaters, Huntsville Huntsville scored to take the game 2 -1 and put the Toros out of the tournament. Our goaltending duo of Derick Bess and Scott Hanthorn both had a good tournament. With a little more luck around the opposition net we could have gone a long way. The Major Pee Wees took on Oshawa at the Children's Arena in Oshawa on January 18 in a regular league game. This game turned into a real shootout. Six goals were scored in the first period with Bowmanville notching four. Toro goal scorers were Troy Mutton from Steve Smith, Jeff Woodlock unassisted, Dean Baumhauer from John Paul Duczmalewski, and Steve Smith from Shane Armstrong and Troy Mutton. Oshawa outscored the Transporters Transporters 3 - 2 in the second frame. Troy Mutton scored on a breakaway unassisted and then completed his hat-trick with Steve Smith and John Paul Duczmalewski picking up the assists. The home team went in front 7 - 6 with two quick goals midway through the final period. Dean Baumhauer fired the tying marker from Jeff Woodlock and Tim Partridge Partridge late in the game. The Toros showed good offensive power in this game but were guilty of too many give aways. Let's tighten up guys, the playoffs are just around the corner. Oshawa L.N.H.L. Red Wings supplied the opposition for an exhibition game played January 20 at the Civic Auditorium Auditorium in Oshawa. The Toros came away with a 5 - 2 overtime overtime win. With four regulars missing from the lineup Nick Dennis was brought up from the No. 2 team. Nick chipped in with a goal and an assist including the tying goal in the third to send the game into overtime. Other Bowmanville scorers were Paul Woodlock (two), Troy Mutton and Doug Lever. Assists were earned by Greg Gardner, Tony VanHoof, Jeff Woodlock and Doug Lever. Bowmanville's arch rivals from Cobourg visited Darlington Darlington January 21 for a league encounter. The first period ended in a 1 -1 tie with Neil Taylor notching the Toro goal from Greg Goode and Doug Lever. The visitors outscored the local boys 2 - 1 in the second frame. Paul Woodlock and Troy Mutton combined to set up Steve Smith for a power play goal. Dean Baumhauer found Troy Mutton in the slot who fired the tying goal in the third. This was also a power play effort. The Toros seemed to let up at this point and allowed Cobourg to hit for two fast markers to go in front 5 - 3. Paul Woodlock redirected a Greg Goode centering pass into the Cobourg net to bring Bowmanville to within one but the clock ran out giving Cobourg a 5 - 4 win. With Cobourg being one of our first- round playoff opponents we are going to have to dig deeper boys. We all know you can do it if you really want it. Reply to: "Speaker tells of plight of Mexican families" by Shaun Herron, speaker, Jacqueline Neun. This is one more article on conditions in another country where trying to compare our lifestyle to theirs. What right do we have to compare our lifestyle to theirs? What right do we have to impose our so called civilized world upon others? It has been proven that when we do this, some of the people we are trying to improve die out. As to the Mexicans, I have travelled the length of Mexico and perhaps have not lived with them as long as Jacqueline Jacqueline Neun. Her speech is directed directed at a group of certain people and is full With doing this we do not improve our relations with Mexico as Canadians. Nowhere Nowhere did a word of praise come about. I can't stand that type of reporting although perhaps true in some cases. I have seen the Mexicans in their adobe hut, with the dirt- floor, but the woman of the hut is a proud woman, she swept that dirt floor clean and her children are dressed in clean white clothes. The older children children take care of the younger ones, something you don't see here so much. You can see they care for each other and have love for another. I was invited in their homes as a friend. They have no money, still have to carry water in some cases, wash their clothes in the river and hang it out on cactus to bleach in the sun. They have no fancy home, car, visa etc., to keep payments up to but have perhaps as much in their pocket book as some of us. I, for one do not have compassion compassion for that type of reporting reporting of conditions in another country. We have similar conditions here in Canada. We would do much better by praising the people for what they have and how they got by. Injustice persists all over the world and everyone does what he can to improve oneself and his neighbour. So, next time we are trying to relate our world to theirs, bring out some good...please. Lucien Lambier. The Bowmanville Minor Atom Toros, sponsored by Checkers Variety, journeyed to the Port Hope Sports Complex Complex last Tuesday evening for an O.M.H.A. League game against that centre's No. 2 Atom Club. The hosts bounced the younger Toros to the tune of 8 - 0. The Hill-towners scored one goal in the opening period, added three more in the second, and finished off the scoring with four more goals in the final frame. Paul Zwicker, the Toro goaltender, had little chance on the shots that eluded him and in fact, he made several glittering stops throughout the game. On Saturday, January 21st, the Ajax Minor Atoms were at Darlington Sports Centre for an exhibition game which the Checkers Variety squad won by the close score of 3 - 2 in a very exciting game. The visitors went ahead late in the opening period. The Checkers club tied the score at the 9:18 mark of the middle frame on a goal by Steve Desmedt. The assists went to Todd Cannings and Tyler Stokes. Ajax went ahead again when they scored one minute later. The Toros again came back with a goal, the sniper again being Desmedt, assisted by Stokes and Chad Armstrong. Armstrong. The winning goal was notched by Matt Dykstra with the assists going to Desmedt and Stokes who had a fine game. The third period featured some good chances at both ends of the rink, but the goal- tenders were equal to the task. Paul Zwicker played a tremendous tremendous game for the Toros, making many stops of the spectacular nature. ♦ HELPS WHEN DISASTER STRIKES! BLACKSTOCK NEWS A.
