On January 21 a total of 57 Nursing students and 38 Mechanical and Electronic Engineering Technicians received their diplomas at a Convocation held at Durham College. The top ranking graduates of the respective programs . were Debra Mele of Whitby (Nursing Diploma Program), David Gordon of Oshawa (Electronic Engineering Technician Program) and Albert Matsushita of Pickering Pickering (Mechanical Engineering Technician Program). There were also three additional additional nursing students on the Dean's List denoting an overall overall "A" average. They were Dianne Loucks of Campbell- ford, Colleen Moloney of Peterborough and Helga Nelles of Oshawa. The guest speaker was Elizabeth Schaefer, Director, Public Health Nursing, Durham Regional Health Unit and a member of the Durham College Board of Governors. In her remarks, Ms. Schaefer Schaefer referred to the Engineering Engineering Technicians as the "producers" of our manufacturing manufacturing sector and the nurses as the "protectors" in our health system, stating that "only by the combined efforts of both, can our nation achieve self dependence, self confidence, and self reliance." The technicians were said to be in the vanguard of those trained specialists who can ensure Canada's competitive position in a rapidly changing technology. Nurses too, were said to be benefiting from high technology. technology. Elizabeth Schaefer emphasized that the nursing graduates will have an increasing increasing responsibility to serve the elderly as the population population continues to lengthen its lifespan. Ms. Schaefer said the Nursing Nursing Code of Ethics applied to nurses, technicians, and in fact to all graduates, because it related to a respect for persons and the basic concept of caring. She referred to the "Four C's" of Caring - compassion, competence, confidence and commitment. The guest speaker emphasized emphasized to the graduates that education never stops, and that they should take advantage advantage of continuing education through the community colleges and the universities. The contest is being co-ordinated by Bowmanville Bowmanville resident Valeric Bowler and former Newcastle Newcastle resident Joan Ransberry.
