In the first period, Jeff Thompson gave Bowmanville Bowmanville a 1-0 lead on a power play goal assisted by Mike Houston. Although Bow- jnanville had the edge in play in this period, Whitby did have some scoring chances, only to have them turned aside by Travis Mar- tyn in the Toro's net. The second period wtiaall Bowmanville. Their strong fore-checking deep in the Whitby end created a lot of bad passes by Whitby and as a result, scoring chances for the Toros. However, Whitby's goalie A1 Bickle made some fine saves to keep the Toros from adding to their score. Although Whitby did have some scoring scoring chances, their best opportunity opportunity was near the end of the period, Two Whitby players got behind the Bowmanville Bowmanville defence for a two man break away. Bowman- ville's Troy Harness (who I think played his best game of the year) recovered and with some strongskatinggot Godfrey, back row, ÀÏ Brunt, RarîÜy Màsterson, Paul Slemon, Dave Down, Joe Humeniuk, Wayne Hunt, Doug Rickard and Kevin Vanallinstein. Mr. Submarine Beats I00F On January 28th, Mr. Submarine ended the season with a three and two record by defeating I.O.O.F. by a 6-4 score. In this game the line of Bizi, Ramji and Jones showed a good combination of defensive and offensive play. This line accounted for 4 of Mr. Sub's goals, while not allowing any to be scored on them, while they were on the ice. The game ended in a disarray with I.O.O.F. getting four penalties in the last three minutes of the game. The goal scorers for Mr. Sub were Steve Bizi 2, Todd Banks 2, Fayar Ramji 1 and Jeff Shannon 1 with assists going to Steve Bizi, Ryan O'Neil, Mike MacDonald, Jeff Shannon and Richard Whiten. On January 27th, Mr. Submarine travelled to Grafton for an exhibition game. The final score was Grafton 6, Mr. Submarine 5. It was a game where the referees let the rough type of play get out of hand. The boys on Mr. Submarine should be proud of their play and the way they handled some bad situations. "Boys," keep up the team effort you showed in Grafton and you should do well in the playoffs. 18 15 Garden Oldtimers Defeat St. Catharines By Bob Sheridan On Saturday we travelled to St. Catharines with only 10 players and were victorious victorious in a two hour marathon game, Joe liaison scored three goals, all on backhand shots with assists being shared by Bob Marjerrison, Hugh German, Dave G irat'di and Roger Shingler, The first of these goals was particularly artistic as Joe broke in from the right side and from a sharp angle whistled a dart into the far upper corner. Joe pointed out that he gained his expertise expertise with the backhand shot from Syd Arnold of Ncwtonville, well known International Whitby Dunlop Dunlop and Osliawa star. He also agreed that this goal, scored in the first minute of the game was the turning point. Bob Sheridan, who centred the line of Jim Olinski and Gerry Henderson Henderson scored two goals, one on a backhand, with assists going to both his wingers and to Hob Skene. Jim Olinski sent Gerry Henderson Henderson in alone with a perfect pass and Gerry pulled the goallcnder with a neat shill, sliding the puck into the open corner. Roger Shingler blasted the winning goal from the blue line with assists to Hugh German and Joe Unison. Unison. Art Hester played a solid game in the Bowmanville net, back to break-up the scoring scoring threat. The. second period ended, 1-0, Bowmanville. Bowmanville. In the third, with the play in the Whitby end, an errant pass by Whitby was stopped by Jeff Thompson who then went in and around the defence defence and beat the Whitby goalie on the short side to give the Toros a 2-0 lead. Troy Harness, Kenny De- smedt and Paul Stainton combined on a goal to make it 3-0. Stainton fed a pass from behind the Whitby goal to Desmedl in the corner, Desmedt passed back to the point to Harness, Harness, who fired a slap-shot for the goal. Whitby's Zedic spoiled Travis Martyn's shut out bid with a goal late in the third. The final score 3 to 1 Bowmanville. Toro Tid-Bits Bowmanville's John Edmondson Edmondson suffered a leg injury injury when he took a shot on the ankle. In the play-off round, Bowmanville Filth- Wheel Toros play a home and home series with Whitby, Ajax, Pickering, Markham and Cobourg. The Bantam 2's played most of these teams in the regular season and if their effort tonight tonight is any indication, there should be some pretty good hockey in this round i of the play-offs, i March Is Red Cross month NOVICE January 21,1984 Tim's Rental - 4 - Richard Bateman 4. On Jan. 24 the boys played the front running LNHL Red Wings and skated off with a hard fought one - one tie. With end to end skating, good back checking and solid goal tending, along with a much depleted but stolwart defence, the Bowmanville boys were able to jump out 1 - 0 when Jeff Laird stole the puck in Oshawa's end and found the only hole Oshawa was to give up. Hanging on, the boys fought hard but with 1:35 left in the game, a Toro penalty deep in Oshawa's zone caused an Oshawa power play to which they added an extra attacker when they pulled their goal tender. Oshawa, who had been shut out all night, finally found the net to draw even. The game ended at 1 -1 and congratulations congratulations should go out to both sides for a well played game. On Saturday, Jan. 28 the boys faced Uxbridge. This game turned out to be somewhat somewhat of a route, ending 12 -1 Bowmanville. First period scoring was by Guy Freeman from O. J. Sidor and Eric Janessens, Jeff Laird from Rob Real, Brad Carnegie from O. J. Sidor. Second period saw Carnegie from Chris Hall and Real, Sidor from Laird and Paul Boyle. Third period, Sidor from Mike Kane, Paul Boyle unassisted, unassisted, Carnegie from Janessens, Freeman from Boyle and Sidor, Janessens from Arron Ulrich, Real from Britt Cole and ending the score with his fourth of the day was Carnegie from Real and Craig deBlois. This was a much needed win but the boys are looking to tougher competition as they move into playoffs Saturday, Feb. 4 at Darlington, 4:30 p.m. against Trenton. Checkers Undefeated The Checkers Variety Pee Wees finished the last game of their regular schedule on Saturday, Jan. 28 by defeating J & J Sharpening 6 - 4 and will enter the upcoming playoff series undefeated. Normally a fast starting team, Checkers were surprised by the quick opening attack by J & J and within one minute J & J held a 1 - 0 lead. Good passing and checking by both teams ensued and Checkers were now in an unfamiliar role of playing catchup hockey. An exciting seesaw contest lasted until late in the period when Checkers tied the score 1 - 1 and the period ended. Characteristically, Checkers Checkers opened the second period quickly and scored in the first minute to gain a 2 - 1 lead. However, not to be outdone, the J & J Sharpening team dug in and scored the equalizer only one minute later. Checkers received a psychological psychological lift in the second shift by scoring a shorthanded goal on a well executed passing play and were again in the lead 3 - 2. Now the outcome of the game would be decided by one final period of play. Checkers' start to finish never let up attitude prevailed. They seemed to control the third period play and scored three unanswered goals, Leading by three goals Checkers did not employ a powerplay for the start of the final shift. J & J took correct advantage of this situation and scored their fourth goal. With 1:35 left in the game, Checkers' power- play skated onto the ice to equalize the play and end the game 6 - 4. Overall, this was an entertaining and well played played hockey match by both teams. Boyle Selects Beat Bundle Park On Saturday, Jan, 28th Boyle Bantam Selects met Rundle Park from Oshawa. Boyle Selects came away victorious with the final score 8 to 1. All the boys played an excellent hockey game passing the puck and also defensively against a spirited team. Goal minding duties were again shared by Stephen Conway and Paul Stephens, Paul letting in the only opposing team's goal. Boyle Bantams opened the scoring in the first period with a goal from Shane Crombie on a pass from Rob Davidson. There was no more scoring in the game until the third period. Bowmanville then had control of the scoring until three minutes left in the game when Rundle Park got their only goal of the game. Opening the scoring in this period for Bowmanville was Paul Brunt from Chris Bloredorn, Blorcdorn then came back with a goal passed from teammates Tim Smith and David Morrison. Brad Sainsbury receiving a pass from Brian Dodd put the puck by Bundle's goalie. The teamwork of Brunt, Bloedorn and Smith showed again with Brunt getting the goal.
