JAMIE LEVER No. 16 Left Defense Photo by Lange's Photo Lab Toros Win Forty Fourth On Friday the 26th, the Toros travelled to Port Perry for an exhibition game and, despite a rather costly letdown letdown in the second period, returned home with a 6 - 5 victory. The game was rather chippy as a total of 19 penalties was handed out mainly due to the fact that the referees were too small and seemed too inexperienced inexperienced to handle teams of this size and calibre. Many of the penalties were called only after the fans reacted to what they considered to be fouls. They also fell down on the job when they were out of position to see a sure goal by the Toros in the third that even the Port fans agreed was in. Two of the Port Perry players sustained injuries, the more serious happening to their goalie. With less than a minute left in the game he suffered a leg injury on a collision in the crease and had to be taken off the ice on a stretcher. Although they lost this particular game the Port Perry team is one to be reckoned reckoned with come playoffs in their classification. Game Summary First Period Toros - No. 14 Noble (Lever) 6:40. Toros Win Tight One The fans really had to be fast on Saturday in order to keep up with the end to.; end action between the Flying Dutchman Major Bantams and the Belleville "AAA" at the Darlington Sports Complex Complex last weekend. It took the Toros several shifts to adjust to the speed of their opponents but then they put on their afterburners, maintained the pace for the duration of the game and were justly rewarded with a 4 - 2 victory. Belleville fired more than double the number of shots by the Toros but David Smith and Scott Webster made many outstanding outstanding saves to earn the win. The checking was very heavy and two Toros Jamie Downing and Scott Page were shakers up on separate incidents incidents but were able to continue continue the game after sitting out a shift. A game of this speed and calibre certainly proves that the team can handle themselves well against any opposition and this is a good omen for the upcoming playoffs. Game Summary First Period Toros Beck (Pithie, Noble) :22. Penalties - Bow. Gallant (interference) 3:50. Second Period Toros - Gallant (Lever, Shmyr) 8:57, Belleville (on P. Checkers Variety Minor Atoms Win Consolation Championship At Annual Manvers Tournament The Bowmanville Minor Atom Toros, sponsored by Checkers Variety, captured the Consolation Championship at the annual Manvers Tournament Tournament on Saturday, January 28 th. In the Toros' first game, the opposition was the Trenton Minor Atoms, the team that Bowmanville must beat to win the Eastern Ontario title. The Trenton club won by the very closest of scores, 1 - 0. The Bowmanville club was extremely extremely flat for this contest, and had it not been for Paul Zwicker in the Toro cage, the score would have been much higher. Bowmanville's next game was against the Black Hawks of the Oshawa Little N.H.L. The Checkers Variety lads won by the score of 4 - 1 in a very entertaining game. Both teams exchanged goals in the first period, David Real scoring scoring for Bowmanville with the assists going to Todd Cannings and Joel Crombie. Chad Armstrong Armstrong picked up the only marker of the middle frame, the goal that proved to be the game-winner. He was set up on a slick passing play engineered engineered by his line-mates Kyle Purdy and Steve Desmedt. The Toros added two more goals in the final period to salt the victory away. Todd Cannings Cannings scored the third goal, assisted by Real and Desmedt picked up the final goal of the game, assisted by Armstrong. Paul Zwicker was very steady in goal to pick up the win. The stage was now set for the Consolation Championship, Championship, which pitted Millbrook against the Toros. Both clubs had good scoring chances, the winning goal came off the stick of Steve Desmedt who scored an unassisted marker at the 5:13 mark of the opening period. This was the only goal of the game, and Steve was awarded the Most Valuable Player trophy for Bowmanville Bowmanville as a result of a fine two-way game in which he worked tirelessly. A tip of the hat must go to Paul Zwicker and the defensive work of Neil Bateman, Joel Crombie, Mark Breckenridge and Justin Merkac, the defensive corps who kept the opposition to only two goals in three games. A fine effort, boys. The Checkers Variety club was awarded a beautiful Championship banner which will be given a place of honor in their home arena, Darlington Darlington Sports Centre. Goodyear Lge.
