In a funny sort of way, I'm almost sad it's here. Planning a trip is nearly as much fun as actually taking it. Arrangements Arrangements are completed completed and the talking is over. By the time you read this column, weather weather and the powers J that be permitting, I should be stretched out in the sun on a beach in Puerto Rico. During the month leading up to the trip I've been boring friends and family with a chronic outpouring of historical facts and current current data concerning the small tropical island island whose northern beaches are washed by the Atlantic while the waters of the Caribbean Caribbean roll onto its southern southern shores. Just knowing that in a few short weeks my feet would be planted on Puerto Rican soil, is the motivation which sent me scuttling off to the library and to the Worlds Biggest Bookstore in Toronto. I was astonished to learn that the national sport is cockfighting, a sickening sickening spectacle by North American standards standards and illegal in most countries. But like the bull fights in Acupulco, I'll probably witness the event in order that I may tell you about it. And Puerto Rico is home to the world's largest rum distillery. Apparently there are daily tours and free samples -- just like the food building at the Canadian National Exhibition. Puerto Rico is a Commonwealth Commonwealth of the United States, and because because of the strong American influence, there will be much that is familiar. For instance, instance, if we tire of the native cuisine and suffer suffer a Mac attack, I'm told the island has its share of the golden arches hamburger outlets. outlets. Reams of film, I hope, will be shot and one of . the primary targets will be El Morro, an historic Spanish fortress that was often attacked but taken only once by the British in 1598. It was Columbus who discovered discovered the island in 1493 but it wasn't until 15 years later that the Spanish queen Isabella saw fit to colonize the island. Puerto Rico's first governor and chief colonizer was Spaniard, Ponce de Leon. The country's 3 million million population today is a mix of Spanish, African African and North American, American, producing a nation nation of many colors from pale white to coal black. Moreover, since most of the people live in the coastal towns, the island apparently seems even more crowded than it is. And tourists are warned that driving an automobile automobile is an undertaking undertaking done at great risk, given that Puerto Ricans observe little or no rules of the road as we know them. Unless I decide to get behind a wheel or the Bermuda Triangle swallows up the jetliner, jetliner, you'll be subjected subjected to yet another column dealing with my personal experiences in Puerto Rico.
