Bowmanville, March 14,1984 Section Two Bethany Bethany United Church was host for the World's Day of Prayer Service. Mrs. Marcia Brownhill was guest speaker, speaking on the theme "Living Water from Christ, Our Hope." Bethany U.C.W. President, Carolyn Porteous read the Call to Worship, saying "On this World Day of Prayer, women of Sweden invite us to pray with Christians Christians of every continent, calling calling us to rejoice in Christ, our Hope, who gives us living water. Let us hear the invitation invitation of Christ, 'If anyone is thirsty, come to me and drink'." Guest soloist was Mrs. Helen Fry, Janetvilie, who sang "How Great Thou Art." Also taking part in the service were representatives of the congregations of St. Paul's Anglican Church and Pontypool United. During regular Worship Service in Bethany United Church on Sunday, four young people outlined to the congregation congregation what they have learned about their faith in the five months they have been studying studying with Rev. Lindsay in preparation preparation for their Confirmation Confirmation on Easter Sunday, and each one expressed her hope for the future. These four young people were Paula McReeiis and Deborah Porteous, Porteous, Bethany and Melissa Dunford and Denise Brown, Pontypool. An innovative event took place in Bethany United on Ash Wednesday in the form of an evening service of worship and communion. The Bethany U.C.W. met at . the Church Hall on Monday, March 5th, at 8:00 p.m. Mrs. Ray Porteous chaired the meeting and business was conducted as usual. It was decided to hold a bake sale at the annual Arts and Crafts Show at the Manvers Arena the first weekend in June. Mrs. Marjorie Coppins gave an interesting report from the recent Presbyterial held at Grace United Church, Peterborough, Peterborough, Mrs. Nelly Michele also attended. Rev. A. E. Kewley of Peterborough Peterborough will be guest preacher at the Bethany United Church, Sunday, March 18th. There will be a luncheon of sandwiches and sweets after the service, to which the congregation is invited invited to attend. Members were advised that the Area Spring Rally will be held at Springville United Church, May 2nd, commencing commencing with a pot-luck meal. Two members volunteered to deliver the used greeting cards to ARC Industries, Lindsay and used eye glasses to the Lions Club in Peterborough. Peterborough. These have been collected during the winter. Mrs. Marjorie Coppins had charge of the Worship and Program part of the meeting. The theme of the devotional was taken from part of the United Church creed - "God calls us to be His Church." When we cease to worship we cease to be the U.C.W. and become just another religious organization. A successful U.C.W. is one which evokes in its members compassion for suffering humanity and the courage to do something about it. Compassion is the hallmark of a healthy energetic lively U.C.W. An interesting skit was performed performed by a number of the members, called "Tell me, Doctor." Here, we had the ladies portraying two doctors and a nurse, interviewing their patients with ailments supposedly in their U.C.W. As well as being humorous, it had a good deal of helpful suggestions suggestions and diagnoses from the medical team. With Mrs. Marjorie Coppins as Dr. Cure All, Mrs. T. Jennings as Dr. We Can Help You, and Mrs. Nelly Michele as Nurse Do Good, anything could happen. Patients were: Mrs. All Run Down, Mrs, Rush Around, Mrs. Fun and Fellowship, Mrs. Money Miser, Mrs. Speakeritis, Mrs. Class Conscious Conscious and Mrs. Self-Centred- ness. The members decided the Bethany U.C.W. was in a healthy condition! The Bethany Golden Stars Sr. Citizens held their regular meeting on Wed,, March 7th. Shuffleboard and quilting in the morning with a good turn out. The business part of the meeting was held at 1:30 in the afternoon with the Pres. Mrs. Addison Scott presiding.
