Durham's regional council council has supported plans for the expansion of the Oshawa Harbour, following a review of a report from the Oshawa Harbour Task. Force. In accepting the task force report during its regular regular meeting in Whitby last week, the regional council has endorsed plans for a southward expansion of the city's shipping facilities. The plan would eventually eventually permit the harbour to accommodate four seawaysized seawaysized vessels and two of the smaller roll-on, roll-off ships used for ferrying cargo across Lake Ontario. However, development would proceed in phases, with the harbor becoming gradually larger to accommodate accommodate increased traffic. Thé plan would permit the survival of Oshawa's second marsh which was described in the report as a valuable wetland resource with potential for educational educational and limited recreational recreational use. A buffer zone would be located between the port and the Second Marsh. Durham's regional council council has asked that work on the first phase of the project proceed early in order to alleviate alleviate problems currently assocated with the harbor operation. The first phase of the harbor harbor expansion would include include the extension of the east wharf and the dredging of a new berth. This project will improve cargo handling handling and ship manoeuvring characteristics. The estimated cost of Phase One is $5 million. Goodyear Ige. Bowling Ü MARCH 8.1984 High Single - B.
