By Kay Edmunds It was a 4 point weekend for San Marino in non-contact play last Saturday and Sunday. The largest crowd of the season was on hand to see Chargers and United Drug in the third game of their semifinal semifinal series Saturday at 8:00 p.m. Both previous matches ended in ties forcing a deciding game. San Marino led 1 - 0 on a Mark Clarey goal after one. United evened things when Greg Adams hit the top corner with a beautiful snapshot from 45 feet. Clarey connected for his second goal four minutes later before John Stainton scored to give United the tie heading into the final frame. Both teams played cautiously not wanting to give up an easy goal as play wound down to the final three minutes in the third. Erik Strand broke out of his own zone past the United defense and Warren Alder followed in to scoop home the rebound to give San Marino a 3 - 2 victory and the series 4 points to 2. The late game between Shoppers Drug and Clinic Pharmacy went to the wire before Shoppers managed a narrow 4-3 victory over a charged-up Clinic squad. On Tuesday, March 6th, Courtice Shell Midgets defeated Bea's Place in the Community Services final 3 - 2 to end their playoff series. Members of the Courtice Shell team are: front row 1-r, Mark Romard, Shawne Broome. Dave Bickle, Dan Harvey, Dan Annis, Paul Strong ; back row, Peter Raetson, Mike Annis, Paul Bunyan, Tracy Stephens, Steve Baker, Brian Dodd, Dan Van Hemmen, Greg Clarke and Coach Bob Jackman; absent, Bill Anderson. Clinic opened the scoring at the 8:44 mark of the first period when George Hillis fired home a Pat Murdock pass. Tully Thompson evened the count before the end of the first frame for Shoppers. Steve Gray had the only goal of the middle stanza as Shoppers Shoppers took the lead. Mike Knight upped the count to 3-1 with under eight minutes to play. Hillis scored again and then Bill Janitsch knotted the score with 1:25 remaining. San Marino, playing their second game in under ten hours, simply outskated the Flying Dutchmen in the lone Sunday game. Dutchmen scored first when Paul Bycock shovelled in a rebound but from then on the Dutchmen were guilty of watching instead of skating as Chargers stormed back enroule to an 8 - 3 rout of the league leaders. Charger goalscorers were Mark Clarey with 3, Mike McGregor a pair, Erik Strand, Dan Norton and Emery Coscarella all with singles. Jim Smith had both remaining goals in a losing cause for the Dutchmen. Action resumes next Saturday at 8 with Shoppers vs Clinic and San Marino meets Dutchmen at 9:30. Our Non-Contact Tournament April 6,7 and 8 at Orono requires a couple of teams. Anyone interested should contact Ray Edmunds at 623-4028 for further details.
