Congratulations to Partner Plumbing and Heating on their brand new showroom and store and to JR Country Store, a mini department department store. Lovely bouquets of flowers were sent in to both stores on opening day. JR Country Store held a lucky draw for a Munchie doll and the happy little winner was nine-year-old Carolyn Hinton, R. R. No. 1, Orono. Orono United Church News Beautiful arrangements of flowers decorated Orono United Church for the regular Sunday morning service. Two baskets of flowers were placed in memory of the late James Willis Sr., Bowmanville, who was father of Mrs. Lloyd Taylor, of this congregation and a lovely arrangement of calla lilies, carnations and mums in loving memory of the late Mrs. Ethel Bird, mother of Mrs. John (Joan) Hodge, Orono. Donald Staples led in the psalm readings and Mrs. Linda King, who is presently Presbytery Supply on the Newtonville charge led in scripture readings and the children's story-time. Our minister, Rev. Wright took the Communion services at Newtonville. Newtonville. Our next Sunday service will have our Explorer girls taking part in the service. These young ladies meet every Wednesday night with their leaders, Mrs. Marlene Ross and Miss Elaine Vagg to learn Christian education, crafts, music etc. Spring U.C.W. Meeting The first general meeting of the Orono U.C.W. 1984 group was held in the main hall of Orono United Church on Thursday, March 29. The president president Donna Scott opened the meeting with reading the poem "After Winter Comes Spring." Many of the ladies were modelling their Easter bonnets and looked very spring-like. Each unit paraded around to show-off their creative masterpieces! Our secretary, Marie Tamblyn demonstrated her creative genius by wearing wearing a very colorful number, complete with real ivy and red ribbons! Doreen Wood gave the very encouraging treasurer's report and Ruth Grady was again selected to serve as our U.C.W. representative on the C. E. Committee. We will again join as members of Avel for slides and film strips, and again sponsor five children for Camp Quin Mo Lac this summer. New curtains for the downstairs downstairs windows and stage are to be ordered and installed in the near future. The ladies of unit No. 1 were in charge of devotions and their theme "Kindness" was most enjoyable. enjoyable. Those taking part - Bertha White, Doris Wannan, Dorothy Barnett, Nellie Baird and Stella Carson. Lois Brown then showed some excellent family slides of humorous situations, flower gardens etc. and these were much appreciated. appreciated. Orono Town Hall Party Another very entertaining and successful card party in Orono Town Hall, Wednesday, March 28, with a good crowd. (11% tables playing.) The results are as follows: 1. St. Saviours Church News The Sacrament of Holy Communion was held at Sunday morning service with Lois and Bob Morton as sides- persons and Tracy Anderson as server. Mothering Sunday - This is a Mid-Lent Sunday. It had some significance in bringing flowers to mothers or a special person whom the church wanted to honour. In some English parishes, the people of the daughter churches came to the mother church of the parish. NEWTONVILLE Mr. and Mrs. Cliff Purdy of Peterborough were callers with Mr. and Mrs. Jack Elliott on Monday afternoon. Tuesday callers with Mr. and Mrs. Don Vinkle were Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Gilmer of Cameron. Mrs. Bea Jones was a luncheon guest with Mr. and Mrs, Doug Drinkwater of Port Hope on Monday. Mr. Reg Falls is well enough to return home after his stay in Memorial Hospital, Bowmanville. Many friends and relatives enjoyed the Skating Carnival at Newcastle on either Saturday or Sunday when the youngsters displayed their skating abilities. Deanery Special - Held at St. John's, Bowmanville, Wed., April 4. Donations were given to Higgins House. Music and speakers were from Higgins House, which is a haven for battered women. The Bishop's breakfast will be held this Saturday April 7 from 8:00 to 10:00 a.m. in Oshawa Holiday Inn. 1984 Youth Conference - May 11 - 13 at St. James, Orillia for young people 14 - 25. Our church bulletins this Sunday are entitled Daffodil Sunday, and are a designation of the Canadian Cancer Society. They appeal for our help and also our generous gifts to assist in their work. You can help with your prayers and support. Cancer can be beaten! The recent Clarke Chronicle issue was as usual a very interesting resume of St. Saviours and St. George's Church activities. Personally, this writer would like to see more churches use this form of communication. Fresh Fruit and Vegetables Out for a lovely drive on Sunday afternoon with friends, we visited the very large Sheridan Mall. To say the place was crowded would be an understatement, but the most amazing sight was the endless booths of fresh fruits and vegetables. Pineapples, melons, strawberries, pears, apples, plums etc., and in the fresh vegetable departments, green and yellow fresh beans, baskets of stake tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuce and remember this was April 1st. We, as Canadians must surely be blessed to live in such plenty! Along with our new Dr. we welcome a new dentist, Dr. B, Kostiuk who has recently purchased purchased the business of Dr. Peter Maartense. Dr. Kostiuk is presently a resident of Oshawa and has been practising practising dentistry for two years, A gentle reminder to all horticulture members of our upcoming district No. 17 Convention, Convention, this Saturday April 7 in Newcastle. Remember the Durham Central Agricultural fair board banquet next week in Orono United Church, Wed., April 11th with those good cooks, Orono U.C.W. serving up a hot turkey dinner, with all the trimmings!
