4 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, April 4,1984 Section Two Heritage House Atoms Play In Tournament During the March Break the Major Atoms played in the Niagara Falls Atom Tournament. This tournament with 104 teams is the largest Atom tourney in North America. Combining the Niagara Falls location with all of its tourist attractions and hotel accommodations provides something for everyone to do when the boys were not playing. The tournament itself was excellent and went off without a hitch. The format of the tournament put 20 teams in our division into 5 groups of four teams. The Toros group consisted of Galt, Grosse Pte. Michigan, Amherstberg and Bowmanville. Each team played each other team within their group to decide a winner who then went on to play the winners of the other four groups to determine the overall champion and consolation winner. Bowmanville's first game on Thursday, March 15th was against Galt. The Toros got a lot more breaks around the net, than they usually do and scored 5 goals to beat Galt 5-1. Matthew Doughty scored Bowmanville's first goal assisted by Ken Vanderheyden and Martin d'Entremont. Jeff Flintoffs' blast from the point found the mark assisted by Matthew to put Bowmanville ahead 2-0 halfway through the first period. Two minutes later Galt scored to narrow the gap 2-1. With just 24 seconds remaining in the first period Matthew Doughty scored from Kent Vanderheyden and Chris Brown to give the Toros a 3-1 lead. In the second period Geoff Goode scored the Toros 4th goal assisted by Matthew Doughty and Ron Luxton. With 36 seconds left in the second period, Matthew Doughty scored his 3rd goal and 5th point of the game, slamming a Jason Kiely pass into the Gaits goal. Three stars for Bowmanville selected by the Galt team were Matthew Doughty, Ryan Putnam and Geoff Smith. The Toros second game was Friday night against Amherstburg and ended in a 3- 3 tie. Amherstburg scored early in the first period to take a 1-0 lead, which they held for the rest of the period. The Toros came on strong in the second period scoring .twice within 36 seconds from the start of the period. Chris Brown scored both goals with assists going to Matthew Doughty 2 and one to Martin d'Entremont. Amherstburg tied the game at the 6:46 mark of the period with both teams playing a man short. One minute and 12 seconds later Chris Brown took a pass from Martin d'Entremont and scored his and the Toros third ■goal of the game to put Bowmanville ahead 3-2. With just 2:11 remaining in the game an Amherstburg shot from the blueline seemed to handcuff Jason Hiscock in' the Toros net and the game was tied at 3. This tie gave Bowmanville 3 pts. out of a possible four, but they still had to win their third game to secure first place. The Toros three stars selected by Amherstburg were Chris Brown, Matthew Doughty and Martin d'Entremont. On Saturday morning the Toros met Grosse Pte. Michigan, who outskated, out hustled and out scored the sleeping Toros 6-3. Bowmanville ironically scored first, 12 seconds into a power play when Matthew Doughty scored assisted by Shawn McFadyen and Ryan Putnam. Grosse Pte went on to score four goals before the Toros were to score their second goal. Geoff Goode scored assisted by Ron Luxton and Kevin Roberts. Grosse Pte. scored again to make the score 5-2, but the Toros came back with Martin d'Entremont blasting one in assisted by Matthew Doughty and Chris Brown. The American team picked up their 6th goal with 29 seconds left in the game to take a well deserved 6-3 victory. Although the Toros did not advance to the championship round, we cannot complain about the competition. This was a very well run tournament and I'm sure that the boys had a good time.
