Items of Interest Guides and Leaders Prepare for Switzerland Trip The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, April 11,1984 5 Letter to the Editor After many requests for a children's concert, the Oshawa Symphony is planning "A Brass Fantasy for Children" Children" (age 3 to 11 years) on Saturday, April 28, at O'Neill Collegiate, Simcoe St. N., Oshawa. One performance will be at 1:30 p.m. and another another at 3:30 p.m. Featured will be the "Eclectic Brass Quintet" - trombone, tuba, horn, and two trumpets - five young musicians who have performed with the Oshawa Symphony Orchestra. The five have also been involved in; many educational concerts and are well qualified to give young children an enjoyable introduction to music as they mingle with their audience playing, demonstrating, and involving their young fans. Tickets will be for sale at the door, or in advance through the Oshawa Symphony Office, 579-6711. Miss Nancy Rietmuller, Bowmanville, recently appeared appeared at the McMaster University University Concert Band Spring Concert as a flautist, held at the University's Convocation Hall, Hamilton. Mr. Terry Kelly, Oshawa, better known as "Super Fan", attended the swearing in of John David Daniel Evans, of Timmins, as a provincial' court judge, at Victoria Hall, Cobourg, on Thursday, April 5th. Son of the Ontario Chief Justice G. T. Evans, they become become the first father and son team to sit on the bench in Ontario at the same time. Judge Evans will preside over the area from Bowmanville to Kingston, and north to Lindsay. Also attending the impressive ceremony were Attorney General Roy McMurtry, and Minister of Natural Resources Alan Pope. One of nine children, the new judge has three brothers who are lawyers, and three uncles who are also lawyers. Sympathy is extended to the family of Cyril Arthur "Bus" Hewson, ex-mayor of Port Hope, and president of the Port Hope Kiwanis Club, who passed away on Thursday, April 5th, in Peterborough Civic Hospital. Dear John, On behalf of the Bowmanville Bowmanville and District Branch of the Navy League of Canada, I want to let you know that we will be formally presenting a new set of Provincial Flags to our local Sea Cadet Corps on lions to one's life in suddenly winning $1,000,000 in a lottery, while the Secondary School teams examined the implications implications associated with the construction construction of a covered sports stadium in a large metropolis. The number of ideas in solving these problems, as well as their originality, was judged to be important. All ideas were carefully recorded by each team in a ten-page "Problem Solver" booklet. The judges were Mr. John Cumberland, Ms. Trudy Lum, Mr. Larry Morton, Mr. Ron Cameron, Ms. Linda Greenwood, Greenwood, and Miss Anne McHenry, Special Education Resource Programmers. Creative Problem Solving is an activity that reflects a focus in education on the image of the learner as a self-motivated, self-directed problem solver rather than a processer or storer of "facts." Monday, April 16th at 7:30 p.m. in the girls' gymnasium at the Bowmanville Senior Public School. These flags will be carried by our newly formed formed color party organized within within our corps on local and out of town parades. The general public is invited to see this presentation. This is also "Promotion Night" for our cadet corps. This August will be an eventful one for these Girl Guides and their leaders when they will spend several weeks in Switzerland on a trip that has been in preparation for about three years. They spent the weekend at the Anglican Church in Blackstock on an indoctrination course. Included in land, staying in youth hostels and learning about the Swiss culture. They will return to Canada on September 1,1984. In preparation for their trip the girls spent a weekend together together at Blackstock. The parents accompanied the girls on the Friday night for a briefing, run with the help of Marilyn Bowers, the Division the group are, front row 1-r, Robin Haluka, Angela Smith, Ruth Stouffer, Kim Medd, Denise Brown; 2nd row, Brenda Knapp, Lucy Postlethwaite, Honey Parfitt, Charlene Annaert, Tammy Cail; leaders, Shirley Rodgers, Gail Wilcock and Barb Henning. The ten girls and three adults are all members of Girl Guides of Canada who have been chosen to represent Woodland Division this summer. The idea for this international international event was first conceived conceived in 1981 and has been thrée years in the planning. The girls range in age from fourteen to nineteen and represent represent Haliburton, Ponty- pool, Newcastle, Hampton, Enniskillen and Bowmanville. They were selected from several applicants on the basis of their work in Guiding and in their community as well as their leadership abilities. Likewise their leaders (from Newcastle, Hampton and Bowmanville) have been chosen for their various merits and abilities. The group will fly to Zurich on August 11,1984. Upon their arrival, they will travel to Our Chalet, the World Centre in Adelboden, where they will meet with members of the Guiding movement from all over the world. While there, the girls are expected to share their culture and knowledge of Canada. After spending twelve days at the Chalet, they will travel around Switzer- International Advisor. With the help of Susan Sheen the girls tried. their hand at German, learning survival phrases as well as European etiquette. Other activities for the weekend included Canadian Canadian folk dancing, singing, making swaps to take along, trying German foods and researching researching Canada and Switzerland. All members of the group must stay in Guiding for one year following the trip and be willing to visit to groups in the community to share with them their experiences.
