The important thing is to be in there trying. Mr. Metcalf has 32 years of music teaching to his credit. credit. And for an equal length of time, he has been serving as a choirmaster and organist organist at a number of churches. He recalls starting starting his teaching career with the Darlington Board of Education. At that time, he was an itinerant music teacher who went from school to school helping elementary pupils learn their musical ABC's. He has a similar post today, although his title is music consultant and he works with approximately 50 schools in the Northumberland Northumberland and Newcastle Board. He and music resource resource teacher Doug Dewell Dewell travel throughout Northumberland and Newcastle Newcastle assisting elementary school teachers with their music programs. He adds that musicians who teach in the classroom are dealing with a unique subject and he believes it helps to present music with a little razzamatazz. Being a bit of an actor helps, too Mr. Metcalf says. Mr. Metcalf sees a num- : ber of advantages to music on the curriculum. For one thing, it teaches discipline and it teaches hard work. Both are essential for any degree of success in music. Students taking part in choirs or bands also have the advantage of learningto work together as a cohesive group. Moreover, music is another language. He describes describes it as a language of the emotions -- a language Which helps students to express express themselves. Training the voice is also one of the first ways in which students are exposed to the arts. "It's not only recreation, it's recreation recreation says Mr. Metcalf in describing his subject. Listening programs are also important, Mr. Metcalf said. He adds that today he is not afraid to admit that even rock and roll is saying something to the students he teaches. "I think a musician musician has to be very broadminded broadminded and has to study and appreciate all facets of music." The music consultant notes that children are not as accustomed to singsongs around the piano as they were in the 1950's, for example. example. Therefore, they may not be able to sing as well as they used to by the time they arrive at school. However, he has noticed that young people have a good attitude towards competition. competition. "The kids aren't scared of competition. They like it," he said. In addition to assisting in the development of music programs attWfcelementary level, Ross Metcalf occasionally occasionally assists high school students. He directed a choral group at Courtice Secondary School from 1969 to 1971. And his most recent project sees him assisting in the musical portions of the Rogers and Hammerstein Hammerstein classic entitled "The King and I". That show will be performed at Bowmanville Bowmanville High School next month. "They're super people to work with," says Mr. Metcalf, Metcalf, in reference to the teachers, cast and crew who are putting the show together. together. Although it is not often that he finds himself working with older students, students, Mr, Metcalf is enjoying enjoying being part of "The King and I". "I'm glad I'm doing it. It should be a great jdiow," he says. And when you watch Ross Metcalf plunge into a rehearsal, rehearsal, you can suspect that his enthusiasm and love of music are the same today as they were when he' entered that first music festival festival as a six-year-old.
