Grant Curtis has a copy of the first plan for the village of Pontypool. The first purchase from the Crown was on Feb. 13,1884. It was Lot 16, bought by Henry Parker for the sum of $50.00. Other purchasers in 1884 were Thomas Williamson, Williamson, Lot 9, for $72. James' Scott, Lot 15, for $53., James Kellett, Lot 17, for $42. and Richard and Robert Gillis, Lot 10, for $48. This early plan has the following following 1 streets marked on - John, Amelia, Thomas, Barber, Manvers, Scott (at south end of village) and Ema ( where church now stands). In 1886, three more streets were added - William (street where Fireball is located), Hillside Ave. and Corbett Ave. (street connecting Manvers St. to Hillside Ave.) The C.P.R. began operating from Toronto through to Peterborough also in 1884. Not only is this a year for Canada and for Toronto to celebrate, it is also Pontypool's Pontypool's 100th birthday. Happy Birthday, Pontypool! On Friday, Walter Bryant with the assistance of several men, hoisted the church bell up into its tower. This bell, donated to the Pontypool United Church several years ago by the Miller family, had been taken down because its tower had become unsafe. However, thanks to Walter and others, the bell is now sturdily held in place. It pealed out Sunday morning, with Rev. Lindsay pulling the rope. (Caretaker Tom Aiken was absent.) i The lovely floral arrange- ' ment that was in the church Obituaries ELDON EVERETT ESSERY A retired farmer, tool and die maker, Eldon Everett Essery, passed away suddenly in Barrie, on Wednesday, March 21st, 1984 in his 68th year. Son of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Essery he was born in Darlington Township. A resident of Courtice most of his life, he attended elementary elementary school in Courtice and O'Neill Collegiate, Oshawa. Most recently he had resided imBarrie. He had ■ been employed in Oshawa and Whitby as a tool and die maker. He was a member of the Barrie'Army - Navy Club and the Senior Citizens Club. Left to mourn his passing are his wife, the former Georgette Mutter - Boyer of Minnesota, two stepchildren Kevin Boyer and Dawn Bauer, of Minnesota, his children Art Essery, Minnesota, Scott Essery, Courtice, and Marion (Essery) Mills, Oshawa, two brothers Ken and Wilfred Essery, Oshawa, three sisters, Della Welsh, Sceburn Thomas, both of Oshawa, Edith Van De Walker, Bob- caygeon, and 15 grandchildren. grandchildren. He was predeceased by a sister Florence Tonkin and two brothers Howard and Irvine Essery. Funeral services were held at the Armstrong Funeral Home, Oshawa, on Saturday with the Reverend D. Throop officiating. Interment Mount Lawn Cemetery, Oshawa. ALBERTLOBBAN 111 for two years, Albert Lobban, aged 85, passed away on Saturday, March 31st, 1984, in Memorial Hospital, Bowmanville. Bowmanville. Son of John and Anne Lobban, he was born at Broomhill Cottage, Knock- ando, Elgin County, Scotland, and educated at Keam School and Hopeman High School. He was married April 8th, 1922, to Martha N. Forrest. A resident of Maple Grove for 30 years, he had previously resided in Oshawa for 24 years. He was employed as a masseur at Fittings Ltd,, retiring in 1969. He was a member of the Jehovah's Witness Church. In World War I, he served from 1913 - 1919 with the R.C.D., C.E.F. Surviving are his wife, a son Forrest, four grandchildren, and four great grandchildren. A Memorial Service was held on April 3rd at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses. Cremation. for the past two Sundays was in memory of the late James Willis. Tom and Nettie Aiken were guests at the Saturday wedding wedding of their niece, Rosemary Killeen, in St. Paul's United Church, Bowmanville. Wedding Wedding reception and dance followed followed in The Flying Dutchman Dutchman Hotel. Tom and Nettie spent Saturday night in the hotel, returning home on Sunday. Photographer at the wedding was Pontypool's Jim Quirk. Linda and Barrie Sytnyk were in Gravenhurst for the weekend. Their niece was married there on Saturday. Christina and Shannon spent . the weekend with friends in Hampton. Hal and Elma Ellison have returned to their home and business on Pontypool's Manvers Street. Mrs. Vicki Beggs (Stanley) of the 6th line will be celebrating celebrating her 96th birthday on Monday, April 16th. We all send you birthday greetings, Mrs. Beggs. Mrs. Beggs lives at home with her son, Wilfred. She has been in poor health for sometime. The Annual Manvers Art and Crafts Show and Sale will be held in the Manvers Arena on June 2nd and 3rd. Carole Stinson is acting Post Mistress in Wayne Hunt's absence. Wayne spent last week in hospital, returning home on Saturday. He hopes to be back in his position next week. Frances VanWieringen spent the past week in Pickering Pickering with her son John and Elaine and family. A warm welcome is extended extended to Mr. and Mrs. Croft who have purchased the Barry Pickering farm on the 6th line. Mrs. Croft has ties in the Bethany area. Her grandmother grandmother was Mrs. Bell, the former Gertrude Rowan, sister of the late Elmer and the late William Rowan (operated feed mill). Barry and Ruth Pickering are now living in their home on the property adjacent to Ballyduff On April 16th at 7:30 p.m. the Annual Meeting of the Manvers Historical Society is to be held in Bethany Town Hall. Everyone is welcome. The; new edition of "The Rolling Hills" - history of Manvers Township - is in progress. progress. Carolyn Porteous has completed the typing of the material. A grant of $16,330.00 has been approved for supplies supplies and printing. It is hoped that the book will be on sale at the Art and Crafts Show and Sale in early June. Cliff and Gwen Curtis arrived arrived home on Sunday morning morning following several months at their winter home in DeLand, Florida. Mr. and Mrs. Dwayne McCarrell of Omemee flew to Florida a week ago and accompanied their grandparents home by car. Gerald Fisk came home from hospital last Saturday. Sunday callers were Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Fisk of Newcastle. Newcastle. We send birthday greetings to Gerald for his birthday on April 18th. Albert Bowins is in St. Michael's Hospital, Toronto. He is having tests prior to a heart by-pass operation. Sharon Bailey is also in hospital hospital in Toronto. Our thoughts and prayers are with them both. Don, Karen and Colin Gil- bank of Lindsay were Sunday visitors with Ruth and Ron Richardson. Rick and Joan Harrison visited on Saturday and treated Ruth to a dinner out. Grace Fallis has reached that age when her income is increased by an additional monthly cheque. To celebrate that first cheque and her retirement, retirement, Grace treated several family members to a chicken dinner at Haugen's Chicken Barbecue, Manchester, Manchester, on Sunday. Grace has retired from her position as bookkeeper at the Richardson Nursery, where she has been for many years. Mary Houston has been hired to replace her. Enjoy your retirement, Grace!
