Letter to the Editor Dear Sir: I was surprised when reading reading the paper to see that the Local and Regional Councillors Councillors voted themselves a hefty wage increase at this time when they are supposed to be preaching restraint when it affects our taxes at the regional level. I did notice that Councillor Cowman opposed this increase increase - the only councillor from Newcastle who did so. I am very interested to see what Councillor Cowman will do now, as everybody knows the regulations today. She does not have to accept this large increase - she can turn it back to the taxpayers if she is sincere. I did notice that she did votft for an increase for herself at the Local Councillor Level. This now makes the Newcastle Council the highest-paid Council in the Durham Region. " Also, I did notice it was adopted at the Local Council by all the councillors present. This will be quite interesting as I am sure this will not happen next year as that will be election year. Yours truly, Maurice Prout.
