He noted that computer education is an important field because almost every school subject has an application application for computers. He admitted that the cost is high. "The problem is what's the cost of ignorance?" ignorance?" he asked. The drop out rate is a matter matter of serious concern as is the unemployment rate among young people. Other problems of concern to the director are the increase in violence in our society and the lack of stability found in modern times. An average person in the United States retains a job for just over three years, said Mr. Sifton. This trend towards a society in constant motion has a cost in social relationships and in working relationships. relationships. Education Week is an opportunity opportunity for the public to be reminded of the issues in education and the ways in which the schools are facing facing these issues the director said. "I believe that if the community community and the school will work together, we can do good things for our schools," Mr. Sifton said. Secondary School graduation graduation diplomas will become more difficult to obtain as the result of new policies being established by provincial provincial authorities. In acknowledging that things are getting tougher at the secondary school level, the director of education for the Northumberland and Newcastle Board of Education said last week that "I think it is part of a .world-wide trend." Douglas Sifton was commenting commenting on the educational scene during a speech to Bowmanville Rotarians last Thursday, May 3. His remarks co-incided with Education Week activities activities in the Town of Newcastle. Newcastle. Requirements for the new Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) are one of today's hottest educational educational issues, said Mr. Sifton. Sifton. He pointed out that students students entering high school for the first time this year will need to earn 16 compulsory compulsory credits out of a total of 30 required to complete their secondary schooling. But in his comments on secondary school education, education, the director reminded Rotarians that today's secondary secondary schools are educating educating many more students who would have otherwise dropped out of the educational educational system had they been attending high school several several decades ago. In other remarks to an audience audience of Rotarians and high school students who were guests at last week's meeting, Mr. Sifton pointed out that we have reached a point where 50 per cent of families are not represented represented by children in the school system. In some areas, the proportion proportion of families without students students in the educational system is as high as two- thirds. "That presents a very in teresting political problem to the board," added the director." director." He noted that because so many homes have no family members involved in the educational system, there's an increasing need to communicate communicate with the public. Mr. Sifton said he doubts that the creation of a full or part-time public relations officer is the answer to this problem. "I hope that teachers teachers and administrators and principals and students will be the board's public relations officers," said Mr. Sifton.
