Legionaires Drop Opening Games To Markham and Newcastle FITNESS -- The Oshawa YWCA is offering a Summer Physical Maintenance Program for all levels of Fitness at the Newcastle Fitness Centre in Bowmanville. The program is designed to improve/retain strength, flexibility, coordination and cardiac efficiency. Held on Wednesdays, 7-8 p.m., the program begins June 6 and runs through to August 22. N., Oshawa 725-4744 The new Bowmanville Legionaires Branch 178 Senior Baseball club opened their 1984 season last weekend with games in Markham and at home against Newcastle. On Friday, the Legionaires travelled to Markham and were set back 12 - 4. After jumping to a 2 - 0 lead, Bowmanville Bowmanville was hurt by errors and Markham coasted to an easy victory. , The Legionaires took the lead in the third as Kevin Gibson walked, Bob Schantz moved to first on a catcher's interference call, then Jody Ross and Paul Dadson each singled, scoring the two runs. Markham came back with four runs in the bottom of the third and another four in the fourth to take a commanding 8 - 2 lead. Bowmanville inched back with single runs in the fifth and sixth as Rick Simpson singled, stole second and scored on Paul Dadson's double in the fifth. In the sixth Jim Treen singled, was sacrificed sacrificed to second by Bill Sains- bury and scored on an error. It was a case of not enough before the storm as Markham scored four more runs in the sixth to sew the game up. HOSTS RACE -- It was officially announced last week that Molson's will sponsor a bicycle race in Port Hope on August lith. Organizer Chris Symonds and race co-chairman Dave Singfield of Cobourg are now hard at work trying to get top riders from all over the continent to come to the race. The brewery is putting up $7,000 worth of cash prizes, including a first place purse of $1,500 for the men's event, in its bid to draw top cyclists. Mr. Symonds said they expect more than 100 riders to come to the town August 11 for the 50-lap, 80-km men's event, and a smaller hut top calibre field for the women's race. As well', there will be short celebrity and novice races. (The main event will feature top amateurs, some of them fresh from the Los Angeles Olympics, as veil as professional cyclists, who are somethinglof a rare breed in North America although tie sport grows in popularity by leaps and bounds every year.
