By Dick Budel Opening week for the Newcastle Newcastle Soccer Club proved to be very pleasant as our club won all three games in which it was involved. The opening salvo was fired by our Virtue Fuels Pee Wees as they downed Hampton 4 - 1 in Hampton on May 22nd. The score does flatter our boys somewhat as Hampton was always in the game and it was two goals late in the game that finally assured the victory. Colts' goals came from Mike Tait, Jeff Koopmans and a pair from Mark Vanderhey- den. The entire team played well and showed remarkable cohesiveness for so early in the season. On May 23rd, the Kraco Atoms opened at home against Ontario Hydro and came up with a big 6 - 0 victory. Goal scorers for Kraco Contracting were Benjamin Vanderheyden and Steven Miller with two each, and David Brink and Dale Foster with one each. The K of C Squirts opened at home on May 24th and also posted a shut-out, 3 - 0 over the Hampton Squirts. Adam Connaghan, Shawn Stephenson Stephenson and Tyler Sokoljuk managed to score despite the handicap of having to play in ankle-knee deep grass. The calibre of soccer was actually surprisingly good considering the condition of the playing field. Our two Mosquito teams will begin the season by playing against each other on Monday, May 28th. That will be an exciting battle. By the way, • we have a couple of openings for Mosquito age players (11 and 12 year olds) due to the fact that several boys have dropped out. If you are interested interested phone me at 987-5429. A reminder to all parents and players! If you still have a uniform from last year that you haven't returned, please do so as soon as possible. We are still missing a large number of uniforms that are needed right away. We will not be able to keep registration costs as low as they have been if every year we have to replace replace 30 percent of the uniforms uniforms because people don't return them. I don't want to charge $25 per child for registration, registration, versus the current $12, but that is what it is going to come'to. So, come on people, let's check those closets! We are still suffering from a lack of officials and really, need some help in this area. If you can help please call me.
