The 1984 Women's Institute District Annual for West Durham was held in the United Church hosted by Blackstock W.I. on Wednesday, Wednesday, May 23,1984. Mrs, L. McArthur and Mrs. K. Samells were in charge of registration. Mrs. R. Brad- burn and Mrs. S. VanCamp sold the meal tickets. A good representation from all nine branches was called to order by President Mrs. H. Prescott who chaired the meeting. We were given a warm welcome by Mrs. H. Martyn, President of Black- stock and Mrs. G. Rickard, President of Providence- Shaw's very capably responded responded on behalf of those present. We are to continue collecting collecting Pennies For Friendship, and the annual Fun Fair is to be held in Solina Hall with Nestleton as hosts. Marion Ellis of R.R. 3, Bowmanville, won the Lewis Beaton Scholarship, valued at $100 as top student in Diploma Nursing at Durham College. Bowmanville, June 6, 1984 11 Doctors Receive Honorary Memberships Wr- nates. Members were appointed appointed to help on registration for Convention. We were entertained with a theatrical presentation "Woman" of different types, by Mrs. Bethany Schryburt of Blackstock. Mrs. Penny Junkin of Lindsay, the Board Director for Subdivision 7, gave a very enlighting report. The Provincial Provincial Convention is to be held at Western University, London in the Spring of 1985. The wall hanging, for which Mrs. W. Cahais of Providence-Shaw's made a block, is to be unveiled June 11,1984 in the Legislative Building, Toronto. A lovely springtime buffet salad dinner prepared by Blackstock W.I. was enjoyed by all. Kendal W.I. gave memorial tribute to deceased members Mrs. Dumas who was a Life member of Bowmanville Institute Institute and Mrs. James Smales and Mrs. Will Ashton both of Hampton Institute. The Standing Committee reports told us of the successful successful year the branches have had. Their programs were interesting and varied with speakers, tours, skits, and demonstrations. Many raised money from catering, doing quilts for sale, penny sales, luncheons and teas. The short course "More cents than dollars" was enjoyed by most branches. A welcome change of pace were two activity songs led by Miss Lois VanCamp, then Lois accompanied By her guitar sang a couple of solos including one called "Friends." Miss Barbara Weese, Rural Organizations and Services Specialist, informed us of the -4-H clubs and short courses to be offered in the coming year. Roll call provided much interest interest as Bicentennial projects of each branch were explained. explained. There is a good number of members taking the bus to the Erland Lee Museum and the Hunter-Hoodless Homestead on the special W.I. Day on June 4th. This was another productive day in the work of W.I. for "Home and Country." Submitted by Mrs. C. Langmaid P.R.O. of Durham West. Upon their retirement Dr. E.L. Ewert and Dr. A.F. Mackenzie were both awarded honorary memberships on the medical staff at the Memorial Hospital Bowmanville. The certificates were presented to Dr. Mackenzie (Dr. Ewert was absent) at a luncheon that was held at the hospital in honor of the two men.
