V.C,# I | (Feature price 3.39 without coupon) g The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, July 18,1984 9 United State Contractors Advance in Ontario Cup On Sunday, July 15th, at Darlington Sports Centre, the State Contractors minor pee wee soccer team entertained the A team from the Dixie Soccer Club, in the second round of the Ontario Cup. After a convincing victory over Georgetown 9 - 0 in the first round, the Dixie squad was expecting an equally convincing convincing victory over the local team. However the Bowmanville team was prepared for a tough contest and matched the Dixie team in the early play. After 25 minutes a strong run down the left wing by a Dixie midfielder midfielder allowed him to cross the ball into the path of a Dixie forward parked ten yards from the goal. He made no mistake, allowing allowing goalkeeper Tony VanHoof no chance. After a further ten minutes Bowmanville gained a free kick from 35 yards and while the Dixie goalkeeper was busy organizing his defensive wall Derek Rogers made no mistake mistake with a strong accurate shot into the far corner of the net. Once the second half began, the Bowmanville team settled quickly and took the lead with a nicely driven shot from Danny Flint from just inside the penalty area. This goal was the result of a nice passing passing play by several team members, and a beautifully weighted through ball by team captain Ken Davies. Shortly after, sustained pressure from Bowmanville created a chance for Greg Healey who was unlucky not to score with a hard driven low shot which the goalkeeper could only push away. Mike Ruthard picked up the ball from a scramble in front of the net and pushed the ball home for the third Bowmanville goal. After that, the Bowmanville team played strong defensive soccer and held on to the final whistle. A well deserved win after a total team effort. Special mention should be made of goalkeeper Tony VanHoof, defenders Derek Rogers, George Bryant, midfielders Ken Davies and Brad Richard for their tireless running. Our thanks to all those who came out to support us. A team from Bowmanville has reached the final 16 in the Ontario Cup for the first time ever. Local Soccer Results DENNISON'S GIRLS ATOM SOCCER Alas, as they say, all good things must come to a temporary temporary end. In this case the,- Dennison's Girls undefeated record. On Tuesday, July 12, Whitby J.M.T. defeated our girls by the score of 4 -1. Hopefully, the girls learned some valuable lessons with this game. If they did, the loss could, in the long run, prove to be advantageous. If not, they could still have a short season. Lesson One - to play their assigned positions and not wander all over the field. Two that soccer is a two way game and that you have to come back to help out the defense. Three - to forget the "Let's wait for someone else to do it" attitude and get in there and kick the ball right away and then keep after it without stopping. If our girls don't want it the other team will take it. Whitby showed them this and it was costly! Four - that the girls along the sideline should be helping by cheering their teammates' play rather than dancing around and playing games. Whitby deserves full marks for their victory, they played a well coached, positional game and eagerly pounced on the Bowmanville errors. Dennisons has a chance to get un tracked on Tuesday, July 19 as they play Brooklin. With some hard lessons well learned they can get another winning streak started.
