< I The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, July 18,1984 Recent Graduate PATRICIA ANN LAMB Patricia Ann Lamb, daughter of Stuart and Doreen Lamb, R.R. 1, Bowmanville, graduated from George Brown College on June 23rd, 1984 as a Certified Dental Assistant. Patricia is presently employed by Dr. B. Kostiuk, Orono. Victoria And Grey Trophy Won by Oshawa Ladies By Norm Smith Of the five Oshawa teams who participated in the Victoria Victoria and Grey tournament for Ladies Pairs at the Bowmanville Bowmanville Lawn Bowling Club on Wednesday, July 11, three won the first three prizes including the trophy itself. This was presented to Dorothy Nicholson Nicholson (skip) and Celia Wigg (lead) by John Hinman, Manager of the local branch of the Trust Company, to which the Club offers its grateful thanks for their generosity. The winners had a total score of 41, comfortably ahead of Freeda Highfield and Effie Hezzlewood with 36. Freeda won the trophy last year with another lead but brought along a new bowler this year. Effie may be new to lawn bowling but is well known in curling circles - or should I say houses! Note to all curlers: lawn bowling is obviously the summer game for you! The third Oshawa success ' was won by Mary Kerr and . Connie Addington who won the prize for High Two-Game Winner with a score of 46. The other prize winners were Bessie Bryant and Ruby Lee of Whitby who were second in the Two-Game Winner category category with 41 and Vi Coole and Shirley Williams of Bowmanville Bowmanville - high One-Game Winner with 32. Skies were overcast and rain threatening when Rena Bathgate, President of the Ladies Section of the Bowmanville Bowmanville Club, welcomed visiting visiting teams from Fenelon Falls, Port Hope (two), Whitby (two), Oshawa (five), and six from her own club. The entry from Fenelon Falls (Gladys O'Connor and Helen Goode - formerly of Bowmanville) Bowmanville) was particularly welcome welcome as this is a comparatively comparatively new club. As it turned out, the tournament was run off with only one short stoppage for rain but bright sunshine would have added to the pleasure pleasure of all. Only one of the local teams (Evelyn Smith and Helen Millson) won their first game; they overcame a bad start and rallied from a score of 1 - 10 after five ends to win by 13 -11 over Jeanine Thornton and Mary Neale of Oshawa. In the second game they came from behind three times to win 13 - 10 over Marjorie Wakely and Bertha Castelyns of Port Hope but met their Waterloo in the third game at the hands of Highfield and Hezzlewood. This time they could not overcome a 12 - 0 deficit after four ends and lost 16-7. They were the only Bowmanville team to win two games. Vi Coole and Shirley Williams of Bowmanville lost their first game on an extrà. end with a score of eight, squeezed past Marg Perris and Mary Thompson of Bowmanville 13 -10 by taking four points on the last end, and narrowly lost (12 - 11) in the last game to Bryant and Lee of Whitby. With a little luck Vi and Shirley might have finished finished higher up in the prize list; Cheers also for Rena Bathgate Bathgate and Marg Nicks (last minute substitute for Irene Carson who fell and injured her wrist in a bowling tournament tournament in Oshawa on Monday, July 9) for holding Highfield and Hezzlewood to a score of 8 - 7 in the first game. They were only one short of their opponents in the second game and with a winning score of 16 in the last game reached a total of 31, just one point short of the prize for One-Game winners - a noble effort by Madam President and her partner! On the social front, and to round out a good day's fun and fellowship, tea and delicious refreshments were furnished and served between the second and third games by Ann Park, Margaret Smith and Thelma Bennett. Elsewhere in District 14, two teams of mixed triples went to Port Hope on Saturday, Saturday, July 7, to compete in the tournament for the Nicholl Memorial Trophy. Each team had two wins but only one (Bryan Hughes (skip), Mabel Mavin (vice) and Ab Mavin (lead)) won a prize: they were second in the Two-Game Winner category. Actually they were tied for first place but had to yield it to another team which had fewer points scored against them. Newtonville Callers on Saturday afternoon afternoon with Mr. and Mrs. Don Vinkle were Mr. and Mrs. Ed Rowe and Tiffany of Bowmanville Bowmanville and in the evening callers with them were Mr. and Mrs. Harold Best of Wesleyville. Mrs. Stella Elliott and Bud of Millbrook had dinner on Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Jack Elliott. Mr. and Mrs. Reid Wood visited his 1 mother Mrs. Wilfred Wood of Newcastle on Sunday evening. Mrs. Helen Armstrong and family of Millbrook and Miss Kathy Hooper of Bcwdlcy were supper guests of Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Stapleton and family.
