Mr. and Mrs. Jim Randall, Stoney Creek were holiday weekend guests of Mr. and Mrs. Lance Plain. Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Staples spent the past weekend weekend visiting Rev. and Mrs. Gerry Hofstetter, Guelph. Mr. and Mrs. Lome Bowins spent several days last week visiting her sisters, Mrs. Rose Agner, Hamilton and Mrs. Violet Midler. Mrs. Teresa Black and baby son Carman, Drumheller, Alberta has returned home after visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ken Gimblett, Leskard. We are happy to report Mary Tamblyn is now home after spending several days in Oshawa hospital. Mrs. Marshall Marshall Chatterton is still confined confined there after breaking her hip last week. Get-well wishes to both these ladies. Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Tennant on the arrival of their new granddaughter, granddaughter, "Jessica Reid", baby daughter of Glenda (nee Tennant) and Lyle Reid, of Surrey, B.C. Mr. and ' Mrs. Maurice Hrirmer, Troy, Chris and Rick of Oshawa and Mr. Harvey Aiken, Strathaven, Bowman- ville were guests of the 0. Challices on Sunday. A birthday birthday party for Deanna, Rick and an early birthday for Grandpa Aiken, Aug. 21 - his 87th. A Home on the Road Orono was literally invaded on Friday, when approximately approximately 40 trailers and mobile homes arrived in the Orono Fairgrounds. This is of course a travel club called "The Good Sam Club", and members are from far and near! Members from as far away as Texas, and we met one couple, Mr. and Mrs. Slaggart, Coe Hill, who by the way knew the late Rev. Basil Long and Rev. and Mrs. Wayne Wright. (A small world, isn't it? ) The membership is made up of all ages and many little folk, teenagers and of course senior citizens. On Saturday evening a real musical program program on the grandstand stage, and on Sunday morning a church service. The Streamliners were a unique sight in Ontario from gratulated for enjoying and leaving the fair grounds in excellent condition. Newcastle Church Service The combined services of Kirby, Orono and Newcastle congregations was held in Newcastle on Sunday, Aug. 5. The beautiful flowers were placed in memory of the late Mrs. Ina Whitney. Guest soloist, Miss Nancy Allin, rendered a delightful solo "Open Mine Eyes" and was enjoyed by all present. Rev. Donald Stiles began a series from "Letters of James" with chapter one "True Religion." Mr. Jack Chard from session assisted with the Sacrament of Baptism for little Nicholas Robert Alexander Alexander Boyd, son of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Boyd. A beautiful crystal bowl was used to hold the water and has been in the family for three or four generations. Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. William Hoy, Kendal who celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary on Saturday, Aug. 4. A large celebration was held Saturday evening in Orono Community centre. Bridal Shower A bridal shower was held at the home of Mrs. John Lowery, Kirby on July 29th for bride-elect Lisa Brewer, daughter of George and Enid Brewer, Kendal. Guests were present from Kingston, Peterborough, Peterborough, London, Lambeth, Oshawa and The Netherlands. Recent visitors at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John, Kirby, for the last three months, Mrs. Lowery's son John Griffith and friend Marina Heemsheik of Holland. The young couple have now returned to Holland where John starts his 11th year playing professional hockey. Newcastle Celebration Civic Holiday Monday was celebrated in Newcastle by the grand opening of the main street! Beautiful planters, and flower beds in front of the Town Hall created a lovely setting for the celebrations. Mr. Murray Patterson of the local Business Improvement Association called the group to order and extended welcome to the crowd. Murray says "We have always had the finest town hall in the area, and now the best main street." This is an endeavour that has taken many years of planning planning and bringing many groups together. Mr. Sam Cureatz, M.P.P., brought greetings and complimented the local business community. Mr. Allan Lawrence added his compliments to all involved. Mayor Garnet Rickard said the completion of the project "Rekindles the old community spirit, and was started six years ago. Some of those involved involved - Province, Regional Government, Newcastle Hydro Commission, Bell Telephone, Telephone, etc., all co-operated to complete the attractive main street we see today!" Other dignitaries speaking included Diane Hamre, a representative representative from the Ministry Ministry of Communications and Transportation, Mr. Ron Dupuis, Mrs. Pauline Storks, B.I.A., and Mr. Don Bourne. An attractive plaque was presented to Newcastle from Mr. Don Bourne. Mr. Sam Cureatz and Mayor Garnet Rickard presided at the ribbon cutting ceremonies. Rev. Donald Stiles gave the dedication prayer, to close the outside ceremonies. 1932 until 1955.
