Bowmanville Fire Brigade and the Legion Band attended the firemen's demonstration held at Ingersoll on Monday, August 6th, and received a hearty welcome when they arrived. Despite numerous counter attractions, hundreds of citizens of all creeds, attended the St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Catholic Church big annual Garden Party on the White Rose Gas Station grounds on Civic Holiday. Owen Fagan, Joe Sheehan, Bill Clarke, and Joe Laphen had charge of the Grocery Gift, Free Money, and Horse Racing Booths respectively. While Mrs. Frances Clarke directed the busy operations in the hot dog and refreshment refreshment stand, Miss Lillian Clarke, the Ice Cream and Soft Drinks, and Miss Vera Brown, the Fish Pond. Mayor Ross Strike, with Miss Ruth Fishleigh, both members of the Oshawa Tennis Club, won the Eastern Ontario Mixed Doubles title in a tournament held at the Oshawa Tennis Club courts on Civic Holiday. They defeated A. W. (Army) Armstrong and Miss Harriet Swail, both of Oshawa, 6 - 4, 6 - 3. Mayor Strike held the Eastern Ontario Singles title last vear. 25 Years Ago, Thursday, August 13th, 1959. A special meeting of Bowmanville Bowmanville Town Council was held unexpectedly on Tuesday evening in the Town Hall, and tentative approval was given for a $336,000 addition to the present sewage treatment plant in Bowmanville. Howard A. "Mike" McClellan, McClellan, a former citizen of Bowmanville and long-time employee of Goodyear, New Toronto, was the lucky winner of the Kinsmen Buick on Saturday night here. He held ticket number D 3597 which was drawn by Miss Sharon Cully. Mr. McClellan was in town on Sunday and heard of his good fortune while contacting contacting some of his Port Darlington Darlington Harbor Company tenants at Bowmanville Beach, Sandy Brown, son of Mr, and Mrs. Jack Brown, sold the lucky ticket. A by-law authorizing the leasing of lands in the Bowmanville Bowmanville Cemetery to George Shaw Ltd. for the purpose of constructing a mausoleum was passed at a special meeting meeting of Bowmanville Town Council held in July. Bowmanville Town Council discussed the request made by the Durham County District High School Board for approval approval of debentures for the proposed proposed two new High Schools to be erected, a 150 pupil school in Millbr.ook, and a 700 pupil school in Darlington, The council refused to approve approve the debentures for the 700 pupil High School in Darlington Darlington because of the belief that is would be filled to capacity capacity even before the building was completed. The Town Clerk, R, B. Reynolds, was instructed to write to the Durham County District High School Board and inform it that Bowmanville Town Council Council will approve debentures for a larger 700 pupil high school to be built either in Bowmanville Bowmanville or in Darlington, Peggy Millson, R. R. 1, Enniskillen, and Bernard Baltus of Bowmanville, have won the branch contest, the zone, the district and the regional of the Legion sponsored sponsored oratorical contest, 10 Years Ago, Wednesday, September 1,1974 Gold Stars for attendance went to Newcastle Town Councillors Ivan Hobbs and Kenneth Lyall, who have not missed a single meeting since the first Regional meeting held in Oetober 1973. Newcastle town council has authorized the purchase of a $16,000 Zaboni ice planer for the new Hampton arena. Mrs. Pat Cook competed in the saddle horse competition at the C.N.E. last week, and Sandra Zakarow in the small pony Conformation Hunter Class. Larry Piper of the Locke TV Electrons was this year's winner of the Howard Cowle Memorial Trophy for his contribution contribution to baseball over the years in Bowmanville. OBITUARY WESLEYJOHN YELLOWLEES The entire area mourns the loss of a prominent citizen of Solina, Wesley John Yellow- lees, who passed away at Oshawa General Hospital, on Wednesday, August 8th, 1984 in his 71st year. Born at R.R. 1 Hampton, he was the son of the late John and Ruby Yellowlees. Educated Educated at Baker's School, S. S. 19 Darlington, he was married September 25th, 1937, to Ada Jane Allin. A self employed farmer for 50 years, he had resided in Solina Village for the last 10 years, and had previously resided resided at Stoney Lodge Farm L25C6, Darlington, R.R. No. 1, Enniskillen. He was a member of Eldad United Church, where he served as a steward, and as a senior elder at the time of his death. He was a member of Mount Zion Masonic Lodge, Brooklin, a member of the Committee of Adjustment for the Town of Newcastle, a past president of the Durham County Co-Operative, the Durham County Holstein Club, the Durham County Soil and Crop Improvement Association, Association, the Durham County Junior Farmers and the Oshawa Milk Producers. He was a director of Durham Central Agricultural Society, and a past chairman of the Solina Community Hall Board, and the Hampton Hall Board. . Wes, as he was familiarly known, was known world wide for his prowess in grain growing, growing, having won the World Championship for Oats at the Royal Winter Fair, seven times. In his younger days he played played soccer in Solina for many years, and still enjoyed watching watching the game. Left to mourn his passing are his wife Ada, sons Harold and Murray, daughters-in-law Lois and Jane, grandsons John, James and David, two sisters Gladys (Mrs. Walter Short), Isobei (Mrs. Ralph Davis), and a brother Harvey. He was predeceased by his parents and a sister Madeline. The Reverend M. Robin Thomson officiated at the funeral services held on Friday, at the Northcutt Elliott Funeral Home. Pallbearers were his nephews Dr. Robert Allin, Dr. John Allin, Dennis and Wayne Yellowlees, Ross Kossatz and Ron Metcalf. Beautiful floral tokens were received in his memory from Durham Co-Op, Town of Newcastle, Newcastle, Vincent Massey School, General Motors of Canada, IBM Oshawa, Solina Library, Solina Women's Institute and Eldad U.C.W.
