t OFF THE RECORD By Cathy Denny The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, August 22,1984 11 Eric Nagler Performs at Bowmanville Library Why is it that Yan Can's easy-to-make, inexpensive, and delicious dinners not only take me a couple of hours to perfect, but usually end up costing me a bundle at the Golden Wok restaurant restaurant down the street, (not to mention an embarrassing mess)? And, why is it that every time I watch any cooking program, the host is already sitting down to eat before I even get a chance to pick the broken eggs off the floor? I mean, it's not as if I haven't cooked before, but since I have been married, (almost a week and a half now), my uncanny flair for Kraft Dinner and frozen pizza just isn't appreciated. Unfortunately, it is too late for me to bow out of this gracefully. I was already caught in the most horrible crime that a wife can com- mitt. I ordered dinner and tried to pass it off as my own cooking. My little scheme, which was really quite harmless, was devised to assure my spouse, once and for all, that the previous meals were just unfortunate mishaps. mishaps. This ingenious plan, "operation "operation good cook", may have worked too, if it wasn't for a few minor flaws. But, how could I anticipate that the aluminum serving plates would contain the restaurant name on the side and bottom edges. The engraved dishes probably aroused some suspicion suspicion in my husband, but that's not what gave me away. In fact, I'm quite certain certain that the receipt protruding protruding from amongst the garbage, and my first attempt attempt at dinner, was all the proof needed. Nothing more was said about the incident. I was content to have only ruined one pound of meat, and he was relieved to finally finally have something in his stomach that wasn't Real Estate Guide threatening to come back up. Until I have mastered the art of edible cooking, I will probably continue perfecting perfecting the reliable "operation good cook". Afterall, I believe believe that the way to a man's heart is through his stomach, even if it does cost a bundle in take-out food bills. Everyone can join in when Eric Nagler gives a show! by Laurie Townsend When Eric Nagler gave a show at the Bowmanville Library last Wednesday, he played an instrument called the "sewerphone" and he sang silly songs. He teased his audience about clumsiness and smelly feet. If it surprises you that the kids loved it, you haven't seen one of Eric's shows. Mr. Nagler has performed in this area three times in recent years, and many of the kids who showed up for Wednesday's show already knew the lyrics to his songs. He has been on radio and television (Mr.Dressup, Pol- kadot Door) and has recorded recorded albums for children. While he sings and plays fiddle well, his greatest talent talent is getting children to join in, make music, and laugh along with him. In an interview alter the show, the entertainer says that he cares about his young audiences, "who haven't had the participation participation knocked out of them yet." Maybe people are just more inhibited as they get older, or maybe television is to blame. One way to combat the problem of having glazeeyed glazeeyed kids watching any old thing on television is to make sure that there are good programs for them to watch. Starting this fall, Eric will appear in the new "Elephant Show." It will be an after-school, weekly program featuring Mr. Nagler along with Sharon, Lois and Bram. Until then, he'll keep up with his busy schedule of live shows. He teaches kids how to play the spoons ("but use crummy spoons so your mother won't go AAAAAGH!") and shows big kids how to play the sa w. •He teaches them to make their own instruments, like tin-can bongos and rattles, and dazzles them with his more specialized inventions inventions like the sewerphone. He wouldn't identify its parts, but "all I'll tell you is you can't go to the bathroom at my house anymore." TOMORROWS FORESTS TODAY'S CHALLENGE For insurance call Brinkman Ins.
