Of course I am talking about the carpet outside that covers the area around the home, and which can give you that beautiful beautiful green lush lawn to enhance enhance the home you live in. The next three weeks are the best time of the year to start your lawn. The weather is just right, cool nights, warm days and a fair amount of moisture by way of the morning morning dew. Usually at this time of year we get a fair amount of rainfall, which will also help to get it started. The most important important part of starting the lawn is the preparation of the seed bed. It does not matter how good the seed is if the seed bed is poor the lawn will be poor. The seed bed you prepare now will have to last for years to come and after the seed has started and the lawn is in place, it is very hard to improve improve the soil or to take out bumps and hollows. To get a good start, you should have at least 4 to 7 inches of good topsoil spread over the whole area, not just two inches over a clay or sandy base. Another important important part of the preparation is the grade. It should slope away from the house so that excess water will drain well. The Whitby Jaycees will hold an all candidates meeting on Thursday, August 23rd, at 8 p.m. in the council chambers of the Whitby Municipal Building. Building. Progressive Conservative Scott Fennell, Liberal Gary Herrema and New Democratic Democratic Party candidate Geoff Rison will be in attendance. All interested persons are welcome to attend. Admission is free. the area is large it will pay to rent a level instrument so that a proper slope can be installed. installed. It is a must to get the best topsoil available, check around and I would certainly want to see the topsoil before buying. The best is a sandy loam, which will drain well, hold moisture and is easy to work with. Make sure that the topsoil did not come from a farmer's field where corn has been grown, since cornfields are all sprayed with a herbicide herbicide which usually will stay in the soil up to three years, and which is hard for the fresh grass to get started.. When the rough grading is done, work the whole area with a rototiller to a depth of three to four inches, and then let it sit for a week. This will get the soil settled down and also will germinate some of the weed seeds that are in the soil. Then rototill once more, which will kill all the small weeds which have germinated. germinated. At this time you are ready to start the finabgrading. This is the hardest part to get it nice and even. After you have raked the whofe area, roll it Youth's Art Show to be Presented in Cobourg Gallery The Art Gallery of Northumberland's Northumberland's Studio '84 proudly presents 'Art Through The Eyes of the Young.' Maaic 28 Division St. Bowmanville 623-1341 with a light roller, this will show the low spots and the bumps in the lawn, and you still have a chance to get the area more even. Before the second tilling it would help, to spread some fertilizer over the whole area, which the rototiller will work in the soil. The next step is the grass seeding. There are numerous blends of grass seed on the market. The cheaper the grass seed the coarser the lawn will be. I like a mixture that has some fine grass, some coarse and also a bit of nursing nursing grass which will get the lawn started quicker. The blend that I like the best is 50 percent blue grass, 35 percent creeping red fuscue and 15 percent annual rye grass. This mixture will give you a bit of each, fine grass for looks, a tough base for playing on, and a nursing grass which germinates germinates quickly to tie the whole lawn together. The easiest way to apply this to the seed bed is with a rotary spreader which will distribute the seed evenly, a lb. should cover 200 sq. ft. After the seed has been applied, take a rake and very lightly rake the seed into the soil, just like a farmer use a harrow. Then take a light roller and roll the whole area so that the seed is imbedded into the soil and the seed will germinate quicker. If the weather is hot a light watering should be applied during the evening when the soil will absorb the moisture faster. Until next week, happy gardening.
