4 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, September 5,1984 Section Two New Librarian Bowmanville Public Library's new ChiefLibra- rian, Barbara Baker, is planning to upgrade the existing library services in order to meet the needs of the public. At present, Barbara, who is a former Assistant Chief Librarian of the Barrie Public Library, is just getting used to her new surroundings. "I started my library career in the Hamilton Public Public Library, where I worked for four years," explained Miss Baker, "Since that time I have been workingto- wards a managerial position position like this one." One area of the library that Barbara Barbara would specifically like to see improved is the staff expertise. "When people make inquiries inquiries at the library - no matter what it's about - it would be nice if our staff could answer them or at least direct them to the necessary sources," said Miss Baker. In addition to this, the Chief Librarian would like to upgrade and increase the selection of print and non-print resources offered by the library. "I don't think that our services services are really sufficient to meet the needs of the public," public," Barbara commented, "We're not growing at the rate we should." However, Miss Baker explained that it is really too early to talk about specific specific projects, having been here only a few months. Barbara plans to present some of her recommendations recommendations to the nine memberLi- brary Board when the meetings meetings commence in September. Formerly the Assistant Chief Librarian at the Bar- rie,Public Library, Barbara is still adjusting to our three-branch library system system and our method of ordering ordering and selecting books. "There's a lot for me to pick up yet," explained the new librarian. "It takes time for a person to become comfortable with a new system system and get to know the staff, but it's coming." Miss Baker attended Trent University in Peterborough Peterborough where she obtained obtained her Bachelor of Arts Degree in History. After that, she went on to the University University of Western Ontario to pursue a Master's Degree in the School of Library and Information Science. Can-Am Cars Ready To Run at Mosport In auto racing a winning streak for one driver often means a fierce battle for what's left, second place, amongst those who can't share the winner's laurels. Ireland's Michael Roe is the acknowledged favorite to win the Budweiser Can- Am at Mosport Park on September September 7,8, and 9 in pursuit of the second leg of the $100,000 CRC Chemicals Can-Am Triple Crown. Behind Roe the scramble for second place should highlight the weekend with four drivers known to have a serious chance for run- nerup spot. That's the way it has been in the past when one driver dominates a racing racing series whether it was Indy cars, Stock Cars or Formula Formula 1 and whether the driver's name was Mario Andretti, Mark Donohue, A.J. Foytor Jackie Stewart. Of the five races run so far in the 1984 CRC Chemicals Can-Am, Roe has won four of them including the season season opening Budweiser Can-Am at Mosport, June 8, 9, and 10. He was leading in the fifth event at Road Atlanta, Atlanta, Georgia on August 19 when a sudden rainstorm swept the track, catching him and several other drivers drivers off guard. In the resulting resulting accident, Roe was not hurt but he'll have to use a backup machine similar to his Mosport winning VDS/ Chevrolet for the rest of the season. Winner at Road Atlanta and leading contender for runnerup"kpot unless Roc has misfortune is Scotland's Scotland's Jim Crawford, best known for his thrilling defeat defeat of Jacques Villeneuve Thanks to you it works... FOR All OF US one year ago at Mosport. After winning Mosport last September, Crawford fought Villeneuve for the Can-Am title to the end of the final race of the season but had to settle for second behind the first ever Canadian Canadian Can-Am Champion. Second in the season opening Budweiser Can- Am at Mosport in June driving driving the RK March/Chevrolet, March/Chevrolet, Crawford is also second second in the CRC Chemicals standings with 68 points to Roe's 84. Twice a runnerup in five races and third in the points standings with 61 is Horst Kroll of Scarborough, Ontario Ontario driving his Frissbee/ Chevrolet. Kroll is followed by Kim Campbell of Grand Prairie, Texas with 40 points driving his March/ BMW. With one third, one fourth and one fifth placing, Campbell is always a threat. The fourth serious contender contender for runnerup honors is Austria's Walter Lechner driving a Cobra Williams/ Cosworth. European Super Vec Champion Lechner has not contested all the Can- Am events due to schedule conflicts with races in Europe however his third place finish at Lime Rock, Connecticut on August 4; behind Roe and Crawford and ahead of Campbell and Kroll, mark him as a contender. contender. The Can-Am teams will race next at the Grand Prix de Trois Rivieres, Quebec on September 2 before returning returning to Mosport for the second Budweiser Can-Am of the season. Practice and qualifying starts at Mosport on Friday, September 7 with more qualifying on Saturday, September 8. The co-fea- tured Budweiser Can-Am starts Sunday, September 9 at 2:00 p.m, with a second feature, the Budweiser' Trans-Am set for 4:15 p.m. MERVYN B.
