The last one was victorious, and this one is favored to win again in the 1984 challenge challenge beginning September 16th. Although Ronza has added some new faces to his crew, he has also stayed with the tried and true, like his famed builder, Andy Wiggers. Mr. Wiggers, who built the 1981 cup winner, repeated as Ronza's builder again this year at his custom shop located in Bowmanville, across from the Port Darlington Darlington Marina. Although the construction construction of both rigs was performed performed by Wiggers, the first Coug model, a 46-foot operation, operation, was designed under the direct supervision of Peterson whereas the second second boat followed a Deboth design. Now that the 32 year old builder has been commissioned commissioned to do the job for the second time in a row, he has almost as much at stake in this year's Canada's Cup as the contestants do. More important important than the money, Wiggers' reputation as an expert craftsman is on the line. "When the Coug won in 1981, it could have been either the design or the construction construction of the boat," Mr. Wiggers explained. "If the second Coug wins, then it should prove that it wasn't the design that was the deciding deciding factor at all. It was method in which the boat was built." Now in the business for just over ten years, Mr. Wiggers Wiggers prides himself on being finicky when it comes to the crafting of his sailboats. sailboats. "I won't let anything leave this shop until it is in tip top condition," said Andy. Andy Wiggers became interested interested in the sailing business business when he launched his first sail-boat at the age of 18. It was at this time that Andy, who was then working working out of the back of a truck, began tinkering in boat repairs and custom interiors. interiors. It was not long after, that Andy, with the help of his father John, was able to open his own shop in his home town of Oshawa. In 1980, the famed builder had crashed the business with the construction of Aquarius, a 46-foot aluminum boat which later became the talk of Lake Ontario. Ontario. Aquarius was a demonstrator, demonstrator, an example of Andy's workmanship, and she certainly attracted at- tention-visually with her distinctive high freeboard, and performance-wise with her victory in the Lake Yacht Racing Regatta that year. Andy started his Wiggers Custom Yacht Ltd, in Oshawa close to ten years ago and later expanded into his present 14,000 square foot Bowmanville location which was opened in December December of last year. "I started out with about five or six workers," explained Andy, "now I employ employ about 22 people, each one specialized in a certain part of boat construction." Although there are many custom yacht builders located located in Canada, he finds himself in competition with ^h)acn Andy Wiggers, the man who built the Coug, the 1981 winner of the Canada's Cup, was asked to construct a second Coug for racer Tony Ronza who will try to take the championship again in the 1984 Canada's Cup beginning September 16th. Mr. Wiggers, owner of Wiggers Custom Yachts Ltd. is pictured pictured here standing on one of his creations just outside of his Bowmanville shop. only one other firm, stationed in Oakville. "Most builders haven't even heard of some of the high tech materials that we use," said Andy. "We're only one of two firms in Can ada that are making boats with such advanced materials." materials." Since he's been in Bowmanville, Wiggers has built seven racers, six of which have been sent to the United States. The other one remained in Canada. As he explained, there just isn't the demand for these type of boats in Canada Canada as there is in the United States. Although he does admit that the Canadian market is becoming a little more interested in the sport as of late. Most of Wiggers orders are for racing boats which can run his clients anywhere anywhere from $100,000 dollars to $300,000 dollars, depending depending on the options and the design of the boat. "It can take three to four months to clench a deal with a customer," explained Andy, "and sometimes it can take as long two years," he added. Wiggers went on to explain explain that the reason why it takes so long to land a deal is because of the amount of time spent scheduling meetings between himself and the designer and the buyer. All three parties must be in agreement before before any work can be started. When construction.is underway, underway, Mr. Wiggers still works very closely with the designer of the boat who helps by explaining certain details of the design and what the finished product should look like. More importantly, Wiggers Wiggers works tightly with the buyer of the rig who has the authority to change anything anything in the construction at any time. Right now he is working on two 40-foot boats, one destined destined for New York and one bound for San Diego. In the future, Wiggers would like to get involved in the construction of 50 and 60 foot boats, but for the time being he is content to work on his racing boats and cross his fingers for their success.
